We only have about 25 to 30cm of topsoil
Below that its impermeable subsoil or rock
There is no store of moisture at depth

well, tbh, we wouldnt crop that country. Horses for courses & all that sort of thing . . .
thats why some areas are mostly arable & others are mostly grazing. Soil types & climate play a LARCE part in determining land use.
You can only work with what you have

it would just be grazing country, unless you had a reliable rainfall & a soft climate

Yes that hits the nail on it’s head,we used to have reliable rainfall and a soft climate. But it is definitely changing and we will need to change with it...

I don’t venture “down Cornwall” much 🤣 the missus came from there 🤦 Prefer my end of the County 😉 Was out your “new” way and when I enquired with people I was visiting whose ground had been done for silage they thought some was yours, obviously they were mistaken.

Ahh, that clears it up! That main road gives quite a good view of a lot of our fields, we can’t get away with much!

Bar 1 day in the start of March were on 9 weeks now. Speaking to a friend earlier they had 5mm night before last and I can see them! @JLLM is circa 6 mile away - anything with you?
3mm here, its helped, rain Monday by the look. Did you see the JD & tanker "having a lie down" whilst on irrigation duties yesterday?
