Am I wrong to request/ ask for another contractor to do as I do and clean the baler down before coming onto my Land to go and large square bale for me? All to try stop black grass coming onto the farm and other weeds.

I know he bales on land with it and serious wild oat problems. He was very put out by it and has soon told other farmers in the area. I clean my baler down from field to field or farm to farm. So is it wrong to expect the same seen as I’m employing him and will pay his bill? Very strange going on from him.

No he has to do it - we have blackgrass now which has def came in from a baler and working its way around the farm as my neighbour has straw in the swath and uses the same contractor - I am not knocking the baler boys as they are always chasing around dodging showers and keeping their farmers happy as we always need them now ! going to ring the guys and see how we can help each other out - have got an old teagle fan on a tractor which we drive around the combine each evening to clean off so would be a start - 11 oclock at night could be dodgy if still harvesting :)

Was reading our local Farmer newspaper the other day and some of the baling contractors who advertise in it actually promote blowing down the balers as a service

lots of reasons farmers use their own kit is disease control - he should realise that doing as you ask is helping keep him in business long term.

It’s common practice to ask contractors to clean balers over here in Shropshire where there’s very little in the way of black grass
Indeed a mate of mine was asked to clean his round baler before baling some straw in the swath and that’s only ever been used for baling silage.
They have a bit over the road. Rumour was it came from a baler, but more likely from bought in straw that was then given as muck for maize. The dairy farm that gets the maize grown, now uses an alternative to straw.

Fine to ask him but expect to get put at the last name on the list for baling and also you will have to pay him for his time blowing down the baler which needs to be £50 hour min.

A local straw aution had terms that all balers to blown off before allowed on farm

At the straw sale the other day a couple of lots were sold on the above basis ( vendor would inspect the baler before you could enter the field ) those fields made £80 acre less than other crops without this instruction
