Is it time to take control of our data (before someone else does)

With the huge advances in technology and it's ability to store data, positioning and when in use, has the time now come for the Agricultural Industry to take control of it's own information.

Whether it is grain or vegetable yields, dairy production, fuel consumption, weight or herd numbers, scanning results etc most of our information is now being transferred on-line and in some cases into the hands of a third party, in many cases unknown by us.

Data has a value and can of course influence markets, and market prices, both inputs or outputs.

Has the time come to license our data, who owns it, who controls it and the information it provides ?

I've been telling you all about Green light grower and similar software collecting your data but no one seems too concerned.
And JD will link Greenstar to Gatekeeper for free, why? to make life cosy and easy for you and to help tie you to both systems and the future sales by your data while collecting more and more from you, I had a farmer who uses exclusively JD kit comment that he would like to change brands but it’s having all the data tied up with them stopping him, smart from their point not so good for the farmer!!
Same with the the major precision farming companies being owned by the multinationals, they have access to so much info for their own use

KISS and keep hold of your data unless you can use it to your advantage I feel

It never occured to me, until recently, that all this "real time" harvesting telemetry was anything other than the manufactuers helping the user be more efficient at harvesting. But obviously they are getting real time accurate harvest information, with a regional accuracy the likes of which has never been seen before. This data must have an enormous value, and we, as an industry are supplying it gladly and for free to those who dominate our markets.

We’re trapped though because every webpage only accepts access if you “consent” to cookies etc.

Cookies vary but generally speaking are limited in terms of what they record and capture. Some of them are security measures which would make life a lot riskier online without them.

There are a multitude of ways of avoiding all these online things. You can start by using a VPN but not many TFF'ers will want to because they can hurt your internet speed measurably.
