Is it too late for AD

I think they have just announced that the RHI tariff for AD plants won't drop till April now so anyone thinking about it has plenty of time!

From a brief read, it appears RHI will be ' re-started ' to April 16 level, however digression still applies. ROC's are ending 31st March 2017. I think FiT's remain the same....

RHI What happened?

  • An increase to tariffs for both biomethane and biogas. Biomethane tariffs have returned to April 2016 levels and biogas tariffs have also been raised.
  • Tariff guarantees will apply for pre-accreditation from spring 2017, when the regulations are brought into law.
  • Spring 2017 will also see a revision to the degression mechanism to align triggers more resolutely with growth.
  • Biomethane or biogas heat applicants that register between today and the date the regulations come into force can receive the reset tariff for their plant if they comply with new feedstock and digestate rules.
  • New plants seeking support under the RHI will only be able to claim support for crop-derived biogas and biomethane for the first 50% of the gas they generate each year

Its not necessarily so that the different bugs need to be separate, in a way quite the opposite. The acetogenesis stage produces hydrogen, which must be utilised almost instantaneously. If it is not utilised in the immediate vicinity of the acetogens, then their activity is inhibited. It is certain methanogens which utilise the hydrogen, in combination with carbon dioxide, to generate methane and water. See for example page 39 in "The microbiology of anaerobic digesters" which is freely downloadable as a pdf https://thunderbooks.files.wordpres...-of-anaerobic-digesters-michael-h-gerardi.pdf
Therefore they work better when together, other factors being equal.
Stephen

Some nice light bedtime reading.

The review is welcome news i think, Well much better than I thought it could have been. The only problem I see, having had a scan over the announcement was the section on
"New plants being required to produce at least half their biogas from waste-based feedstocks to receive support for all their production. As this will help divert wastes from landfill and make use of an available resources."

A lot of plants don't have or may struggle to get the appropriate planning permissions or condition overturned to allow the import of waste and the additional waste regulations that this will bring in.

Slowly but surely. We have slowed down now that the RHI isn't dropping till march. Still on blocking this 15 high twin block retaining wall to hold the ground that the digester is going on. Concrete pump booked for next week so when that gets laid I shall be arranging delivery of the digester a week later

How's it going? Have you taken delivery yet? What size did you settle for? I think we are about to go with omni! Just waiting for final spec to be sorted! But we are nearly there!

I'd be interested to know why they seem to push so hard on the need to test the slurry ? Given slurry is at least 92% water and has a VS of 80%, so for every ton of slurry you have 64kg of de-gradeable material.

Depending on the carbon content and conversion, not alot of CH4 per tone of slurry. Of course the MJ of energy will depend on what you feed the cows, however I'm sure you want to ensure that is converted to milk before it hits the slats :)

Can you buy these digesters with a olive green roof, which is what our planners want?

Haha that's what my planners insisted on and no you can't unfortunately. I'm just waiting for them to visit and insist on changing it because the planner didn't have a clue how well the cover blends into the sky so I'm hoping when he sees it he will change his mind. If he won't then il just stick another green cover over the top or something. Are you going to order one?
