is it worth it

Ooof. I'd have to say no. But depends what the alternative is. Have you seen the price of bean / pea seed?

If you can get 2.75t of spring barley as opposed to 3.5t of wheat, I'd say there are some other options.

spending 125/a on N fert for second wheat ?
Urea at £400 a tonne = £20 per 50kilo so even if you put on 200 kilo per acre that's only £ 80 an acre currently thats about 450 kilos of wheat , urea at £250 a tonne and wheat at 130 needs 400 kilos of wheat if my maths is correct, I remember growing wheat at lower prices than that with urea above 200

a new winter coat and shoes for the wife.
Just a coat and shoes? Sending her out on the game to make up for the high fert price seems a bit extreme.

Thing is, once you look at wheat as a whole - seed, sprays etc - there are easier ways to get 3t of grain. Oats, barley, spring cereals etc. You really don't want to be doing a big herbicide stack and four fungicides on a crop you'll only put 120kgN

I was going to have one field of second wheat but have changed my mind, as inputs vs yield on our shallow soils just don’t stack up. I have a lot of oats gong in this year. If you are on strong land and can get 3.5t plus on second wheats might be ok though.
2019 harvest we had some second wheats at 4.5t/a, 2020 it was 4.5t/ha if someone could tell us the weather for the next 6months it would be so much easier 😂

If your wheat yielding less than 4t maybe join stewardship.

There is in theory no problem if costs double overnight, as long as receipts double overnight too.

Its the uncertainty of not knowing how inflation will play out that causes the problem.
