Is linseed a good break crop

Not growing beans , although ideal as a break , horrible to combine and not much better to sell , rape would be good but circumstances have ruled that out

I often wonder on small acreage of these niche crops , what you do if it’s not a lorry load or you’re left with 2-3 tons that won’t go on a lorry .
If it’s a high value crop then you can justify the part load charge. We grew lupins to feed our own stock so a small tonnage was fine. I sometimes deliver OSR by tractor and trailer. Last time the remnant went in a 3 ton trailer. I could hear the fingers drumming on the steering wheels in the queue of HGVs at the weighbridge…. then right on cue my starter motor jammed.

Linseed is very variable with regards to yield and profit.
Weed control has become more challenging, as it has in most break crops.
I’ve been growing it for quite a few years in a ww, osr, ww, linseed rotation. I had intended to replace it with enhanced overwintered stubble last year, but in the end dropped osr instead.

Any tips for a novice, first time cutting it tomorrow, not expecting much yield as the rubbish has started to hide it in places 🙈
This is our first year growing it for 20 years so not the best person to reply but:
Ours was desiccated 3 weeks ago. Agronomist says needs4 weeks but it’s 8.5% off the combine so got to be done in current weather.
New knife in combine, though crop cuts surprisingly easily
Very little issue with crop wrapping around auger (problem years ago)
Drum almost flat out and concave so tight it’s almost touching drum. We tried all ways today and this was the only thing that worked.
Sieve settings similar to OSR, top sieve slightly wider
Still leaving a few unthrashed heads in the straw but others in the area with much newer combines experiencing the same
Cut in the heat of the day
Patience - lots of it
Dont count the trailers, it’s too disappointing

In the middle.
Just finished mine today. Looked good all the way until the 30 degree heat we had a week into flowering which ment it flowered for about 4 hours a day before giving up. It has done about 750kg/AC which is ok but disappointing after selling 1.24/ac last year and still having this year's seed left. This is the second year in a row where I have not dessicated and it cuts fine as long as the sun shines.

It actually cuts better if it's a bit green in the stem still.
Use deawning plates if you have them.
Otherwise fast drum/rotors tight concave, bottom sieve nearly shut, top sieve 8 mm.
Fan 600.
I used a knife that has now cut 1200 acres, just adjusted the clips down to stop it lifting, worked fine.
But it sounds horrid going through a NH cr combine.
And the dust this year was incredible, literally couldn't see the header at times.
I definitely want to investigate the stripper header next year.

Mines got various companion crops in with it, or should I say weeds, ranging from BG to Fat Hen. I’m wondering if the linseed will flow better or worse with the rubbish. Been sprayed off 3 weeks so the rubbish is dead now. 🤔
Shame really, was looking really good until 4 weeks ago 🤷🏼‍♂️
Not sure I dare take a picture of it today 😬

Is yours a rotary lexion or walker?
A friend has a big rotary and it wraps round somewhere and catches fire.

Purchased a walker purely to avoid wrapping issues. This soil can suffer with late Fat Hen appearance and not unusual to get hit with a scruffy crop, plus with chems going and timings getting harder with the weather I thought it was a better option for me as I'm on my own at harvest ( and can cut later with a walker )

You can also auger a badly threshed crop back into a walker combine more easily in january.

I still have the elevator plate we made to put it back up the front of a cr for a second go.

Just used to cut the boils off and hoick it all back home. Three months on the drying floor then back through the combine. Zero volunteers. Clean crop.
