Is Now The Time To Exspand

As in the title really. What are people thoughts on exspantion in the current climate ?

Have we reached a new normal base price wise? Feed ? Fert ? Milk ?

some local farmers holding off buying sheds and equipment ect in the last 2 yearsbecause of price rises, waiting for them to come back down. But we know that it is not going to happen any time soon.

Ive seen a lot of cows and farmers giving up of late and plenty of warning oh how scarsh milk might be this winter. Some people might say there is your answer.

But if you have scope in turns of land availability to expand would now be the time to do it ?

I guess yes I can’t see 1000 cow dairy’s becoming 2000 cows dairy’s now with the reasons you stated. Which in itself must be some room for growth for smaller farmers. I guess more your 200 cow man adding 100 cows and the cost attached to that and if it would work?!

Even your 200 cow man adding 100 cows will struggle with planning now. Any building involving livestock now has to have a SCAIL analysis completed for ammonia emissions, and if Natural England feel the emissions will negatively impact on sensitive sites within a certain range, it will get thrown out.

Unless of course you put up some general purpose ‘storage’ sheds that might just happen to ‘store’ some livestock in the future…… :sneaky:

Typical dairy farmer when price of milk gets better produce loads more and then moan when price drops.

Reading between the lines from these comments. Will there ever be a good time to exspand an agricultural enterprise ?

Or are we better to increase the amount of investment off farm in these uncertain times ?

With the uncertainty of food production going forward there must be opportunities for someone ?

There’s a never-ending supply of farmers desperate to expand for some reason, constantly looking for an excuse to do it. Why justify it to others? JFDI and then find out at your leisure whether it was a good idea or not.

Have we reached a new normal? I’ll say it yet again, markets always always always overshoot. Assuming milk prices are gonna stick is only gonna end in tears.
