Is ready mix concrete too expensive??

Yesterday in Newtown I was looking at construction going on out side
WH Smith and Boots I saw concrete being mixed in a waste skip with excavator and then the excavator used for filling
Has ready mix going too expensive?

Part loads can be dear. Readymix outfits round here charge a m3 % for what's not in the wagon (based on 6m3 loads) otherwise it's not worth the fuel and drivers wages to deliver. At the same time a lot of people underestimate how much cement is in readymix and so always think they can do it cheaper.

I think you are spot on with this. Seen people use a skip for concrete pumping hopper before. Tip readymix lorry in minutes then pump it out as and when required at your own pace. No waiting time for the lorry that way.
Just thinking that doing construction work in the middle of town it would need to be a good quality mix not just stirred round with a digger in a skip. When we did the footings for an extension on my house we tipped the last cube in the telehandler bucket and used a mini digger to put it out.

Probably a part load like mentioned above, around here they have been charging for a full load, no matter how much you use unless your a big customer of theirs. If you send any back you then get charged for disposal too.

Could have been a dry mix in the skip and the digger was stirring in the water to make it.
Seen them at that sometimes, pick up a few cube in a trailer or skip then add the water on site.

How much a cube is pre mixed concrete in the UK?

We have a 1000 litre pan mixer and we always mix our own because its a fair bit cheaper and more convenient to mix as you need it. We normally use a fairly strong 10x 35kg bags of cement per metre cube mix at about 5 to 6 euros a bag. Bigger variable in the cost is the ballast. We have a seam of gravel on the farm so dig our own but even bought in its cheaper here to mix your own.

£100 min now / m3

That's a bit cheaper than here, but I still reckon mixing your own should be cheaper than ready mix.
I doubt it you can barely buy the cement yourself for the cost of readymix, deffo can't compete if buying the agg as well. A lot underestimate 2 key things, the amount of cement in readymix and the strength of the cement used in readymix. How much is 350 to 400kg of cement?

cement here is about 160 euros a tonne so 350 kg is 56 euros.

It was a few years ago but when we built our big cattle shed we mixed 70 cubic metres ourselves over one summer. Buying in just cement, for me here, and bear in mind I'm not in the UK is is less than half the cost of ready mix.

The companies that do ready-mixed own most of the aggregate pits around here. Coincidentally, the sums never quite stack up to mix your own using bought ballast.
To be fair, it would probably only cost me £80 surcharge to get 2m delivered, out of Smiths, which being mostly lorry and driver time is not unreasonable.
