Is teat sealant worth it ?

After drying off 50 cows on Tuesday all with sealant and/or antibiotics that would have been averaging no more than 10L i am yet again frustrated with the amount of milk leakage
Makes me wonder if sealant is actually necessary

Been using sealant for decades tried all makes , always get some leak
must have been doing it wrong for ages

Iv stopped using it, only effect I'm finding is no vet bill for it. Honestly no Scc difference, better udder health if any thing.

Do you close off the top of the teat with 2 fingers when inserting to stop the sealant squirting up into the udder?

Never used it,bought some cows treated with it and was amazed how long you keep seeing it,can be weeks after.

No , i feel doing that builds up a pressure and when released does exactly what you describe
But as said before i obviously doing it wrong and have been for years

Your milk contract states you get trained properly or don't use it.
It is bad for cheese, and that's why we need to follow the training given. It should not enter the udder.
We get no milk leakage, it's operator error.

Pinch the top, fill teat and let the "build up" come out the teat.

That's the thing though, since only using half a tube per teat we never strip sealant out after the first milking and never have any in the filters

Why only use half a tube? Penny wise pound foolish.

I get the odd one that needs redoing, certainly not common place though. Used to be a bit of a pain as mine go to away land and handling facilities were a bit limited.

Easiest thing would be to check it's not operator error before the next batch, after that I'm a bit stumped as I don't dry off into cubicles.

Dried 22 off just before Christmas some still milking over 20 litres, no milk leakage including a holstein who if she was milked slightly late would be pissing milk everywhere
Whole tube per teat, sometimes 2 tubes per teat if they have large teats and I don't feel like 1 has filled it
Milk with cluster, pinch top of the teat strip remaining milk left in teat canal (this should stop the pressure build up) then tube/s in and pull down on teat until a slight clump of sealant is released out the end to form a plug

A friend of mine was one of the test farms for sealant when it first came out, fairly high yielding holsteins. The company who was trialling it with him didn't tell him to pinch the top of the teat and so he was just squirting it in like antibiotic. Ended up having MASSIVE mastitis problems and he even had a couple of cows die. Ended up going to court and walked away with a nice sum of money.
