Well listening to the radio news this morning we can see some politics getting in the way.

Angela Rayner just now said Labour ambition is zero deaths. When challenged if that would mean Labour woud go for a full lockdown the reply was whatever it takes. So in the next few days we can see the Labour Party focussing on the following 'The Tories do not care about your Granny'. And lo we shall see a full lockdown or near enough. And lo 4 the redundancies will really start and lo the Labour Party will then go on about jobs.. Rayner said Labout would pay more furlough and more for self isolators.

Yep, I can see the media politics ramping up soon.
When we had motorways first there was no speed limit and no crash barriers in the middle these were soon brought in to stop folk being killed but we still use motorways and some folk die, they didn't say motorways are dangerous so we are going to close them.
sensible precautions yes, shutting down life no

I think GUTH is right in that more and more people will take no notice, lots of them never did.
take this whole masks thing if you actually look around at least half the people don't use them properly if at all and IMO if they are not use properly they create more problems than they solve because of the constant handling of them, so in that case half the people are making things worse so they just as well forget the whole idea.

But you are right this seems to be getting more of a political football

I think it’s always been political. The original herd immunity plan was abandoned because it seemed heartless it’s always better to mess up the economy rather than have people die because the economy is ‘just money’. If the opposition start talking zero deaths with what has gone on you know it is just rhetoric. I am no fan of how this has been handled but the Government will always be on a hiding to nothing trying to handle something we have never seen before.

I concurr it certainly has in my view. The manchester mayor Burnham was a keen poster boy Labour spokesman before Starmer took over. But just anticipate even more in the coming weeks. Fascinating.

Folks might say getting the virus isn’t a big deal, unless you have other health problems or are older!
I know only one person who got it. 29 year old male. Fit and hard as nails. Never smoked and generally looks after himself health wise.
Got it last April. Hospitalised for four days, and seemed to recover quickly enough. However, he just has never been the same since. Frequent stomach upsets. Lack of energy. Heart palpitations.
Young or old, this is to be avoided.

I don’t think anyone is saying this is no big deal generally all contagious illnesses need to be avoided by it flu, coughs and colds or bubonic plague. You talk about a young man who has suffered I know a 50 year old who previously had leukemia who has recovered from it with no side affects and a 70 year old who didn’t even know he had it. It really is about how society copes with it that is important. There has been nearly six months between the peak and now lots of time to learn and prepare and yet they want to roll out the same methods as before and don’t say it’s because people went on holiday or to the pub or shopping that we are in this mess because what were they supposed to do. The virus is everywhere and you can’t hide from that fact even though people will try and hide from the virus.

This will be the problem. Just one person spreads. Unless a full lockdown not sure how one / the government is going to stop these occurrences happening.

I would imagine just the opposite is the case, as Bozza is well aware that the bedrock of the Tory party and voters are the elderly people at the highest risk of hospitalisation and death from Covid. Hence his consistent and muddled overreactions everytime a hot spot is identified.

It doesn’t help that he is losing the Daily Mail and Daily Express readers for sure.

looking at how the common cold has run rampant round this part of the world since the schools went back just shows how ineffective all the masks, and hand jell actually are.
So they've all got coronavirus then as that's what the common cold is. The media constantly swapping between Covid-19 and Coronavirus infuriates me.

Masks, hand gell and social distancing are the only game in town atm, unless you want to end up with a total lock down and the massive economic damage that will result.

42,000 dead so far. I find that difficult to ignore.
And isn’t that the problem as soon as anybody suggests doing anything to get the country moving someone quotes the number of people who have died and conversation stops because you are thought to be a heartless git for suggesting anything other than a lockdown. CV 19 is not going away anytime soon nor is a miracle cure coming over the horizon lockdowns are a temporary solution that exacerbate the problem because every time people are released from lockdown the problem will build up again.

Yes, I agree that wack a mole lockdowns are pretty useless. A more national approach is the only thing I can think of, no large gatherings, no parties, no stadiums full of people etc. Those businesses with a bit of nous have already got policies in place, one in one out, perspex screens etc. And shut pubs and other premises that clearly don't give a f**k. Just try and keep the cases low enough to at least get us through the winter.

Very difficult to get an accurate figure though. They are now counting anyone who dies within 28 days of a positive test regardless of cause of death. This makes no sense. It is true that 'excess deaths' have been high this year but then they dipped late last year, possibly due to a mild winter which must have left a large number of very ill and vulnerable people going into 2020.

SARS is nothing to be laughed at but we should also look at historical patterns of herd immunity and so on. It's not in the interest of a virus to destroy all it's hosts. However, this one has had a huge impact on the vulnerable, not helped by the decision to send a lot of sufferers back to old folks homes to free up capacity in hospitals. For everyone else, it has been mild on the whole.

I also wonder about the impact of air quality in cities and how that may have made people vulnerable over time.

With regard to air quality I actually think that nations with poor air quality fare better than those with good air quality look at China although everyone doubts their figures it is unlikely they had anything like the death rate the U.K has despite a population 20 times as big but their cities are terribly polluted. If you have survived so far in smog your lungs are pretty resilient.Likewise here in Kenya most of us live in dirt and have a pretty good immune system plus the median age is about 20 rather than 40 plus in the UK as such there aren’t many care homes.
