He made all the money off the forestry because they rob farm land, then he bought a farm???? What a fud

He didn't rob anyone. He started planning trees, then ran a gang that planted trees. He also undertook pine weevil control spaying and weed burning.

He saw a business opportunity and worked hard to exploit it. He was adaptable and flexible (he was originally a grouse keeper).

I've nothing but admiration for the man.

I think the last page or 3 demonstrates the public dont care about farming at all not one bit, they will when they are sat at a wooden table on a wooden chair with no food on that table which is coming to them slowly but surely but until that day the answer to the question is, no they dont.

Because of forestry!!!!!!

Now you are just being silly. Nobody is planting trees if they can get a better return chasing sheep about - the land is planted because that is what offers the best economic return in the presently prevailing circumstances

I own some farmland that had 10 people living on it in 1861, by 1961 there was one full time owner/occupier.

The same story can be repeated all over Scotland and the RUK.

In general forestry has moved in to fill a vacuum. That has changed a bit in recent years and may change again.

On that we can agree, but when we start to get towards that scenario support structures and land use priorities will change.

Like it or not we do not presently have a shortage of food and food production is not a high priority for the public.

There is no mileage to be gained for farmers or farming in castigating alternative land use.

Alot castigate it though because it affects them badly, vermin for example, thats going to be massive now that Lynx are going to be introduced , their inability to control roe and fox is bordering on pathetic also.

I honestly think the best thing UK farmers can do is cut production by half. Take environmental payments and plant trees.
The mindset that "we" must produce cheap food to feed the masses is killing the industry. Let them import the cheap stuff and consontrate producing the quality stuff at a profit.
Man alive - did you see what you started:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

You need to be real careful talking about trees round here:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::sneaky::sneaky::sneaky:

Now then - did you ever hear of a chap called Ronnie Rose? He was the wildlife manager when the EFG started planting up Eskdalemuir and one of his first priorities was to make sure that there were a couple of dead foxes lying about when the postman came.

We all have neighbours - some good and some not so good but its the owners that are the poor neighbours, not the trees.

Without wanting to disagree I am also kind of sceptical that roe are in any way an agricultural pest.

Never had a roe damage a fence, had a couple killed by fences.

There are recorded cases of Tb in roe but vey few and far between, in common with all wild deer they don't interact with cattle or sheep in the way that short legged no tail collies do.

They do carry tick but then so does my collie and spaniels.

They do eat trees but in actual fact they greatly prefer birch and willow to spruce and can be diverted to an extent by careful planting - once the growing tip is past a meter high the tree is fine unless a buck decides to use it as a fraying stock - and the best way to prevent that is to leave the master buck alone.

What's your obsession with forestry?? Have you sold a bit of ground for planting because your near retirement??? You don't give a stuff about the younger generation
I have several times explained that I have both farming and forestry interests (on a modest scale).

I have no obsession with either and have merely rebutted ill-informed comment and predjudice in similar fashion to the manner in which I might chose to rebut comments on other forums regarding farming subsidy junkies.

No land sales.

The younger generation will have to make thier own way in the world - if they want to chase sheep and hill cows about they will have to make economic sense of it - as will those who decide to engage with the forestry or any other industry.
