Is there a standard minimum load before cap charges apply?

Blimey found them, that was easier than I thought. "Cap charges will be passed on as received from the haulier".........
Doesn't seem entirely fair as hauliers could vary wildly and the farmer gets no say as to who the haulier is....
I'm a bit grumpy as was sold as a part load to go 14miles up the road and ended up being hauled 140 with a correspondingly bigger bill. Not worth getting upset about or making a particular fuss but annoying all the same.

Speak of the devil!

I have 2 loads of Spring oats leaving the farm today ( should have gone between Oct and Dec!)
The contract says 56 tonnes and the collection note says 2x29 tonne loads.
First lorry got here at 10 this morning and we struggled to get a shade over 27 tonnes on it.
Both lorries are taking it to Carlisle on Monday.

They set off at 1 am to drop something off in South Wales before they get to me.
When they got there, they were told that the first lorry could tip straight away, but they wouldn’t have room for the 2nd lorry to tip until 3 pm!
Poor bugger, by the time he gets to me it will be 5ish and dark. Which isn’t going to help shovelling the last bit on levelish so he can shut his rollover sheet over it.

It will be interesting to see if there is any capped load charge, bearing in mind that they were only supposed to take 56 tonnes, in lorries that should take 29 each (58 total) and can only fit 27 each because their trailers aren’t big enough!

To my mind, it is either the merchant not organising big enough trailers, or the hauliers fault.
Probably the merchant, because they knew the contract was for 56 tonnes in total, not 58.
They knew the bushel weight and I have dried them since it was tested, which should have improved it.

How light are the oats never heard of not getting their weight on with oats.

Not sure. But did actually manage to get just under 29 on the 2nd load - just! And we didn’t have to shovel it into the corners. Just a bit of shunting to level it enough for the rollover sheet to close.
Biggest problem was the amount of fat hen in it pre drying.
But Frontier had tested them and got the bushel weight.
They have yielded a little more than I thought because I’ve got this much left. I reckon 7, maybe 8 tonnes.

Fortunately, a local Dairy farmer wants them.

Always ask that my cousin’s company haul our grain. ADM, Frontier etc know this and it is on their movement system and they use them whenever possible.

Phew! :)

I used to have a local mill who was happy for me to deliver a trailer load in at the end of a contract which was a life saver at times....

Or are all merchants different? I always thought it was 25t? Where do I find out?

I’m fairly sure every contract states you can deliver a certain percentage under the contract tonnage. Action that and they should charge you the last capped load

When you sell to Frontier by the lorry load, the contract comes back in multiples of 29 tonnes. However when loading the weight alarm goes off under 29 tonnes, and weigh tickets always around 28.8 tonnes. Even had to take some off when slightly over 29!
