Is there any skill in growing an economically viable crop of OSR?

I'd insist on a copy of their insurance, a reference, and would limit number and spread them out. Detectorists would have a maximum area a day. Plenty of temporary grass here now.
£20 quid a day they can come whever they like. Metal detectors too. It's leisure, not a service.

too cheap - they pay £50 a day pass or £75 for a weekend, have a waiting list

£70ha on pigeon control I reckon. And it’s the best investment into the crop. Luckily I have a lots around where my 16 year old quad bike and shooting mad cousins lives so he can earn some cash!

£70 ha on pigeon control you've been done over!
Most people make money out of this .

Looks like your true costs of growing OSR would make
interesting reading .

Drill some volunteer OSR and some barley in a cover crop mix. Throw wheat around like it's going out of fashion (screenings from drier be great). Get paid for folk to shoot off it.

Spray off crop in spring and put barley in. There you go, double cropping...

I have a friend who went all over Somerset shooting crows and pigeons off crops for me. He always said he didn't understand people paying to shoot driven game.

3rd party liability that most businesses would have covers you I would imagine

most shooters are covered by membership of BASC and CPSA etc

Had this conversation with my insurers and ended up paying a small
premium to make sure .
Check the detail of what the BASC covers my insurers weren't happy that
it covered everything.

How have I been done over?! I’m taking into account all of the time we spend chasing pigeons in the winter, and the money we spend on rope bangers etc. Time is not free. Maybe I’m one of the few who actually take things like this into account? My true costs are minimal. Farm saved seed, total 180kgs N, kerb, a gramnicide for volunteers, 1 fungicide, glyphosate, pigeon scaring, direct drill, roll with a dose of slug pellets from the rolls.

Simple why are you spending £70 ha on pigeon control?
You have this down as an expense when properly managed it
could be an income.

Because looking after a large osr from pigeons takes a lot of time, some years are worse than others. £70 is absolute max But I would rather err on the side of caution than ignore blatant costs.
