Did you make that gate?
It looks a proper job ! (y)
Defo going to try that string/ band trick, thanks !
Yes I did make it and it has been fantastic for calving and more so to push a calf on to suck the cow seems a lot happier standing in the corner of her pen rather than pushed in a crush and you can keep her tight against the next gate with the chain in a ratchet at the top , the string in front of the udder and pull very tight over back works a treat it puts pressure on the flank nerve like a kick bar

Most annoying for us has been once they’ve mothered up and been in a small pen and all good they’re ringed/tagged/numbered before either being turned out if weather good or into another communal pen. Marker spray seems to have put several off there own lambs this year
i had that problem last year with the marker sprays. So i stopped doing it.

Put a baler band around their middle just in front of their tits...and pull it as tight as you can

Done that for years, even the odd case when milking in the parlour and we used a walking stick to pull the rope under them.

Don’t do it too tight though. If they’re a bit jittery, too tight can turn them into a bucking bronco and good luck getting them in the crush next time.

Interesting this. I have had 3x first time mum's reject a lamb this year and I'm now wondering if it's happened when I've iodined the naval. Like the iodine smell has just knocked them off their game. Hasn't happened with any of the older mothers. Has anyone else experienced this?

We were finding the ewes licking the iodine off the navels more than usual this year that we were going back round them to make sure. Any problem sheep with the markers we’d put a spot of iodine on both lambs at the same point and some on the ewes nose which usually sorted them out

We’ve got an iae with an inch and a half lip and the calves don’t even like that. Need a crush with no floor ideally.
Bought an IAE calving gate this year and installed next to crush. Best £360 I've spent in years. Brilliant for sucking a calf or pulling calves out.
Head yoke locks cow and side gate with removable bars. So simple but effective

We have done away with our calving gate this year replaced it with a mobile race and basic self locking headstock in the calving shed. After 20 years of putting our cows through the calving gate the beggars won’t put their head through the yoke as they know something is up and reverse to the back of the pen every time, despite our feed barriers being self locking yokes. Time will tell if it’s the right decision as we start this week.:nailbiting:

The only thing more annoying than a sheep that rejects one of its lambs is a sheep that has one lamb and rejects it :banghead:
Not only rejecting it but trying to murder it by ramming it into the concrete wall :banghead::mad:

Glad it's not just me! It's bad enough taking one off her to feed but I'll be ready peeved with her if I have to feed the only one she has whilst she swans about the field Scot free ... where's the gun to the head emoji :joyful:
