I couldn't figure out how to get it into the bodge thread, which is where I thought it belonged. It starts and runs and will split wood, we tried once. Definitely it needs some work before one could make much use of it. It even uses an old fire extinguisher for an exhaust, you can see it peaking out the front in the third photo.
We were wondering about the drive train. There's no doubt it's British. The remnants of paint on the engine are a darkish green. I m adding some photos of just the engine. Hopefully these will help.

Our local engineering works used to have a Morris1000 engine and gearbox driving a big guillotine, he used to have to go up through the gears to get to max revs! Think 'elf 'n safety killed it in the end!

I'm not overly anxious to use it as is, either. i believe he has plans to redo some of it to make it more user friendly, but the price was right. Over here any type of used wood splitter is $800-$1000, he got this for $200. He figures that he could probably get that for the drive train, if we sort out what it is.

Hmmmmmmmm have never smoked a pipe or cigarettes and don't have a beard but if my memory is correct that looks like the 1500cc A55 Austin Cambridge Engine.

That engine was used in the Nash Metropolitan (1960)

It's a manual gearbox. Has a shift lever attached to one of the shift forks. See the first engine photo.
