Is Trump Right About Free Trade

Trump’s megaphone diplomacy of free trade and tariffs, are nothing at all new coming from American presidents.
Didn’t Reagan and GW Bush also wail loudly about imports undermining America and American workers. Ronnie Reagan was particularly upset with the Japanese for sending over cars that were far superior than the American tat produced domestically.
Bush slapped tariffs on steel and Ronnie slapped quotas on Japanese cars. Made a whole lot of noise for voter consumption.
Couple of years later when the same voters were on the receiving end of the resultant and inevitable inflation, the tariffs and quotas were quietly dropped.
When Johnny Rustbelt will soon have to pay a few more cents for his can of Budweiser, to fund the tariff on aluminium, he won’t be a happy camper.
Ditto when he has to pay a blast of extra cash for his Chevy.

What tarrifs does the eu put on Americans stuff?

98% of the steel and aluminum used in American automobiles is produced within the U.S.

They reckon the price of a sixpack will increase by about 1 cent.............hardly earth shattering.
Apparently we purchase 15% of UK steel output...who knew.

As far as I know all UK Steel foundaries have closed because David Cameron, our ex Prime Minister, didn't bother putting tariffs on the recent Chinese Steel dumped across the world.

All we have left is Indian owned plants that recycle waste.

David Cameron ran off in a huff and resigned the shiny faced coward.

If you have ever made a deal in your life you know the first step is ask for more than you are prepared to take.

America has an imbalance in trade of $800 billion, as he stated throughout the election, it was his intent , if elected, to try to correct this situation........the people who voted for President Trump support him in this move to fair trade.

Because too many at the top have their snouts in the trough and are advised by civil servants who time after time have shown they are completely useless. Turkeys dont vote for xmas, its a bit like all the bull going on in the states plenty protecting their own little nests

Fair trade...and you must protect your country...there eill be down sides but.it needs balancing.

Our rural areas in oz are getting void of people...suicide rates in rural areas sky high...services shrinking...

If we continue down this path of "you must get bigger" there will eventually be a handful of land holders on each country...exagerated i know but you nlknow what i mean..

I dont buy it all...the free trade is bs..weve lost alot of skills we still.need even with technology.

India just slapped huge tarriffs on peas etc..

Trump is right to look after usa auto industry...might be a bit dearer...keeps the community healthy...doesnt have to be all gang bustas all the time...

Ant...

So right now we let your Range Rovers/Mercedes etc in at 2.5 % while you guys levy 10% on anything going your direction........not very fair is it..?

Tut tut. Do like the Germans do in America. They build plants there and produce American style vehicles for the American market. Export lots of them also. Win, win.
They Japanese do likewise in Europe. Build plants, hire people build European style cars. Win, win.
Ford of America of course figured that out decades ago. Set up in Europe. Built cars fir European taste. Win win.
What did GM and Chevrolet do? Slapped loads of American style cars on a ship and sent to Europe.
We didn’t buy them. Price was not the issue. Style was. There is a huge difference you know.
