Young farmers in Wales hoping to benefit from a scheme offering a start-up grant of up-to £40,000 have until the 12 June to express their interest.

The Young People into Agriculture scheme will support 150 young farmers looking to establish a new business off their own back or develop an existing one with the government making £6 million available to support the scheme.

Looking at diversication into holiday let's on the farm would they be eligible for the grant

Hi there,
Thank you for your message.

The grant is specific for those starting a new business in their own right or developing an existing business. To clarify we would suggest getting in touch with the Welsh government: . Here is some further reading detailing further criteria -

Does anyone else feel this new scheme is unfair? I became head of holding in 2015 with no financial help from wag apart from a couple of hundred pound a year as a young farmer top up..now there was a yess scheme before I joined which closed in 2014 and they didnt open a new yess window in 2015 due to lack of funds..now my understanding is this new scheme only goes back 12 months prior to 2018 for farmers under 40 who became head of holding to April 2017 and are offering significant financial reward of 40k over 4 years. But what about all the farmers still under 40 that started their business between 2014 and 2017 that don't get help seems really unfair to us surely?

There’s a lot of ties to it if you look at it properly.. I looked at it but there were quite a few reasons not to go in, a good friend who is a fairly big adviser on this sort of thing said to me about it, then when it came out she said don’t do it.
