Isobus joystick

Has anyone fitted one? Are they simply just plug and play? And would it be able to move from one tractor to another, even if using different isobus looms?

Any recommendations and rough prices?

Our trailed sprayer has an isobus joystick, I think it is made by Muller. It just loops into the wiring loom for our Topcon with two cables - one goes to the can circuit for the screen and the other up into the isobus socket in the tractor roof. We swap it between two tractors very easily.

Here’s another one for the beauty parade. Have a look at the just released Arag Explorer joystick. Has some nice features like haptic feedback....

Any isobus joystick (like anything else isobus) should be AEF certified for max compatibility with third party gear. They all connect the same way and just loop into the isobus, usually from the in cab 9-pin socket and provide a Y-style connection so you can continue to connect other ISO displays etc in the cab.

I can’t tell you about price or performance as I just mostly use the built in Fendt joystick which can be assigned implement functions and button assignments, just far fewer than this latest crop of aftermarket sticks.

I'd found the Muller one through Google but the Arag one I haven't seen before. Both look good though thanks, see what price they are and if its worth it next. I just thought it would make operating the big rake a little easier, at the moment you have multiple buttons to press on the screen and it can get a bit hectic at times [emoji23]

Let’s us know how you get on.

I wanted to get a Mueller ISObus weather station for the sprayer, but the price was kind of ludicrous, so abandoned that idea PDQ. Mueller now owned by Trimble not that there’s much difference from a buyers/users point of view.

Mueller seem to have the weather station stitched up. You’d think someone else would have tried to undercut them by now.
The stitch up is the isobus bit. The actual business end of the weather station (the external ultrasonic sensor head) is made by Airmar for various different markets including marine etc. It’s white labelled and resold by various different brands.

You can get the Airmar WX head in several different signal outputs, so if you fancied a bit of integration you could make it work with a £50 windows or Android tablet for the display for about half of what Mueller want! Just won’t plug and pray into your tractor isobus display as an isobus service.

Please can you post a photo.
I’ve got the joystick running into the Mueller comfort terminal on our Knight trialled sprayer. Would like to use the sprayer through a Topcon X30 on a different tractor. We’ve had it working but would be a lot easier with the joystick but it’s not obvious as to how to plug it in.
Any guidance would be gratefully received.

Looks like there are 2 different plug set-ups for the Joystick:

1. D-SUB (aka DB9) connector for going into the Mueller terminal; or
2. The round CPC connector for plugging into the tractor ISOBUS 9-pin socket.

The connector pin assignments are on page 12:

You would need to match the CAN pins to suit the X30 display connector (Connector 1 the 26-pin Tyco connector), or loop in/out of the ISOBUS somewhere along the way. Depends on how its loomed up I suppose.

Thanks for that. I was hoping there would be some sort of adapter plug but life is never that simple!

Just to check on your present setup with Comfort terminal - the joystick cable with the DB9 (male) at the end goes directly into your Comfort terminal leaving the mid-point (female) DB9. Is this middle DB9 connected to anything or is it left free (with or without a loop connector)?

In the other tractor, do you have the tractors in-cab ISOBUS socket free? It makes life a lot simpler to connect and disconnect the joystick if so.

Mueller do make/or used to make an adapter cable shown for connecting their terminals to tractors ISOBUS using the in-cab CPC connector. This could be used to adapt the mid DB9 connector on the joystick cable.

Moving the joystick to the ISOBUS tractor with X30:
1. The mid-way DB-9 connector (female) would be connected to the CPC in-cab connector, using said adapter cable above where it would pickup the main bus connection for CAN_L and CAN_H (in and out) and 12V power for the joystick. See diagram below....

2. The end DB9 you may be able to leave free, but I suspect logically you would need to make a "loop-in-loop-out" type terminator using a female DB9 connector and 2 wires across pins 1/2 and 4/7. This would then plug onto DB-9 male connector, to close/loop the CAN-L and CAN-H bus connections to their respective in and out pins. Take it off when you move the joystick back to the Mueller terminal.

Looks like the latest Mueller Joystick Pro version comes standard only with a round CPC connector only - so it makes moving it from one ISOBUS machine to another a doddle - as long as you have an in-cab connector!

The older joystick with the DB9 connectors on the joystick would make it easy to plug the joystick into the Mueller terminal, but just that bit more challenging if you want to move it between isobus machines

A lot of the major tractor manufacturers now allow the buttons on their multi-function handle or armrest to be configured as an ISOBUS joystick. So it means the operator can assign certain buttons on the tractor multi-function handle or armrest to control functions on the ISOBUS implement.
Obviously the implement needs to support AUX-N too but most of the major players do.

New Holland T6 and T7 tractors with SideWinder armrest from model year 2018 and later allow the buttons/paddles shown below to be used for AUX-N.
