Isuzu dmax rust problems

Hi, I have a 13 plate double cab dmax which I have done 20,000 miles in. I first noticed some rust coming out from under the top of the chrome strip on the bumper about 4 months ago. After a few trips to the dealer they agreed to cover it under warranty.

Since then rust has appeared on 6 other body panels, most noticeably on the rear doors around the window, rear wheel arches, leading edge of the roof and on the tail gate. The are only small spots where it is bubbling up from under the paint. My truck is white, and I have seen a number of other white ones with the same problems. Is anyone here having the same problem with the white ones (or any of the others)? After allot of complaining they have agreed to cover all of it but I am concerned that it will just keep happening on all of the other panels.

Slightly off topic, a few years back, Toyota had a buyback/recall on all Starlets that were not metallic finished. Seemingly the metallic ones were undersealed different (for a different part of the world) and didn't loose the back suspension due to rust when you hit a bump.
But I'm not sure about rust being colour specific, unless there is a difference in the steel treatment/rust prevention before painting?
Very annoying to see rust, especially bubbles under the paint, on such a young truck
Push them hard before they start the repair, let them see if its not sealed properly (rust coming back) you will make them redo the work. Because its very easy to refinish and not seal the rust properly, it will just reappear. But, if done properly you will never have any more trouble.
Did you push for a replacement, or at the very least a full respray?

Keep an eye on the oil level, that it doesn't start creeping up the dipstick

thanks. That's handy to know about the Toyota as I can use it when negotiating with them. I have pushed for a replacement but they insist that they cant handle request like that at my local dealer and I must take it to the dealer I bought it from (3 1/2 hours drive away) for them to look at it. I think I'll now push for a full respray as I have already been back into the dealer 10 times in less than a year (5 for rust and 5 for the dpm problems).
I thought my oil level was fine as I've had all the ecu upgrades but I just checked and it has shot up again.......

Sounds like you ought to invest in a couple of gallons of Waxyoil! I had a new Mazda pickup in 1977, blew a hole in the side of it with the power hose at less than three years old. Seems things haven't changed that much with Jap pickups, but I expect they are thrown together in other third world places now.

The whole World has changed since 1977. At that time Japanese vehicles, and Italian ones, would have holes in the sheet metal you could put your fist through by the time they were four or five years old and it was not uncommon for vehicles to fail their first MOT due to rust. I had a 1977 Ford Fiesta that had huge holes in the door frames by four years of age and that despite having a full respray at 18 months of age.

When was the last time you saw an obviously rusty car's bodywork at under ten years of age? My Land Cruiser is virtually rust-free at 16 and lives outdoors by the sea and its underside is perpetually covered in cowshit, mud or salt spray, often all three and more.

I do waxoyl vehicles when they are new, but not bodywork cavities.

This Isuzu paint sounds decidedly dodgy to me. On the other hand I have not seen it and it could be external contaminants bleeding on the white paint for all I know.
Pictures speak a thousand words. ;)

Aren't the rust warranties only for if holes appear though? Used to be with nissan when the old fella had one, didn't give a monkeys fart about surface rust at the time, would be 20 years ago now though so could well have changed.

It's a 5 year warranty which covers any rust that comes from beneath the paint so shouldn't be to much of a problem getting things fixed.
It's just a pain having to go into the dealership every couple of months when new rust appears. And the only courtesy car they have is a 10 year old focus.....which isn't ideal for work.

3 year everything warranty and 2 year powertrain warranty

My 1990 (160,000mls) Isuzu has only this year started to show signs of rust, seems they must have changed something somewhere, not great to be happening with such a new machine……..!!!
Are you aware of others with problems? Is there any groups (as there was with the Navara engine issues???)

Not managed to find any groups online. But out of the 6 white dmax's I've seen up close 4 have had rust in similar places. None of the owners had noticed it until I pointed it out. So I think it might be the case that over the next year people will start noticing.

Ours is a 62 plate in metallic grey. No visible rust but have noticed the paint is very thin where it's been scratched.

Paint thickness on mine was measured at 75 microns. I don't know much about it but I think it's meant to be between 100 and 200.

Not sure how well this will show up but this is a fairly typical example.

Not sure which panel that is but if it is on the top of the doors and there has been no impact damage, it points to poor paintwork more than poor steel. Have you tried wiping it gently to see whether it is coming from poor paint and paint preparation or from something that is lying on top of the paint, like angle grinder dirt or train brake deposit?

It is fairly unusual to find cars that rust from the steel underneath the paint these days, mainly due to the immersion cleaning and undercoating before application of actual undercoat, topcoat and gloss (on metallic).

It's the rear door around the window. Isuzu confirmed that there was no impact damage and it was blistering that was coming from under the paint. Would they indicate it's something with the steel?
