Isuzu DPF issues again

DPF filter has been regenerating every 30 to 40 miles for the last 6 months. I've had the filter taken off and cleaned with DPF cleaning foam and the EGR checked and cleaned. But still the damned thing regenerates every 30 miles give or take. Doesn't take long to regenerate and oil level doesn't appear to be rising. Should I just ignore it? Had a 400 mile round trip at the weekend and the horses weren't spared up and down the motoway, but every 30 to 40 miles it went into regen mode. D-Max is 4YO AND 31000miles.

DPF when removed had quite a lot of black gunk but the foam stuff did eventually drain through and it seemed to to swill out. First run once DPF put back on saw clouds of steam or smoke but quickly settled down as DPF dried out.

Edit, the oil dilution thingy was reset btw.

I am finding the same here with a regen every 30 to 40 miles. I put most of mine down to short journeys. My dmax has 18k and is 2.5 yrs old.
I am sure I read on here the dealer can do a forced regen to clean it all out? Mine is due a service soon so will see what they dealer says.

How do you know it's doing it?
Mine is nearly 2 years old and 45000 miles and I've never noticed it do a regen. Or am I not looking properly?
Different tone on engine and smell on mine usually check on dash and see it reduce but it is doing it quite often now I've seen this thread , regen more often on supermarket fuel I thought.

As super4 says, there is a display on the dash. Engine sounds rough when in regen mode.

Dealer did a forced regen on mine and didn't do any good at all. I think it's just a standard regen forced via the ECU.

Dealer didn't clean the dpf, preferring to pay my local garage as trust him to actually take the filter off. He used some foam stuff that eventually soaks through the filter then wash it out once it starts to drip through. Disappointingly that made no difference.

Last 550miles including a 400 mile thrash down country averaged 28.9mpg which for mine is quite good. Does a lot of shorter 5 to 10 mile runs and with a mix of longer runs. Long or short it regens 30 top 40 miles. Used to be around 200miles. Service manager pretty much disinterested. Said it was normal to regen twice a day on a longer run. Saturday a 400 mile trip cruising at 70..... ish ;) saw it regen 11 times. Can't be doing engine any good. Doesn't take much to annoy a customer and will have probably turn me away from isuzu next time. Every other journey sees it doing a regen as I approach home which is getting tedious. Probably just sell the bar steward.

I know of 3 Fords and a couple of Toyotas that do similar running about as mine and all know they have a dpf but no idea if and when they actually do anything.

I have the poverty spec version and no indication on the dash as to when it re-gens, it sounds like a bag of spanners most of the time to be fair!

If this is of interest
Software and cable (ELM327) are available on E-Bay for less than £10 delivered.
Remember this is now an Isuzu, but might be of help, if a full remap and filter delete isn't an option

If I'm keeping it then I'd maybe consider a loader tine through the centre of the dammed thing. Course it'd have to be remapped too. May or may not pass an mot in the future if they tighten up the test. Come to governments attention that there are a lot of vehicles had a dpf removal as it cheaper to remove a blocked filter rather than buy a new filter. Evidently removal could invalidate your insurance too. Not worth that particular hassle. I'll see what isuzu have to say but don't think it makes any difference come the day I change my vehicle as apart from anything else I'm not sold on the new Isuzu engine.

Finally got round to swinging by dealers. Every 30 to 35miles it regens regardless of how it's driven. It's going in next week to hopefully get to bottom of problem. One possibility might be the injectors over fueling. They've had others in with same issue and symptoms. Be interesting to see if it's sorted. As a recap I had the dpf cleaned out and it made not a bit of difference to the regen cycle.

I have noticed regens are more frequent on supermarket fuel, every 20-40 miles. BP or other branded normally 70-90 but can get to 110. That is on a truck which has done 119k miles. Sticking with the branded fuel as much as possible now.

I don't use supermarket fuel really. I don't know if there is any truth in that their fuel is inferior? But anyway I have an account with BATA in N Yorks and their pumps are about the closest.

I'm not sure how often these d-max's are supposed to regen. Dealer says 30 to 40 miles is too often. They more concerned the oil level is rising and heading to the 'cross of destruction' on the dipstick. It's only done 31,000. I'm sure it used to be somewhere in the range of 100 to 200 miles between regens.

But are the two things not related?
Do they not over fuel the cylinders to clean the filter, causing any unburnt diesel to go into the sump. Past the piston rings, apparently.

Hopefully you have a dud sensor or a software upgrade will do the trick. Politely ask the dealer what diesel brand he would recommend, as if it does go pop, that's the first thing that will be blamed. Not just Isusu, they just copied what Toyota were blaming, when they had all the injector pump warranty claims.

I'm led to believe that during the regen cycle, diesel is injected into cylinders on exhaust stroke and then blown down to dpf to raise the temp. If you stop mid regen then diesel can drain down from cylinders into sump. It also can get into sump anyway as not all is blown out the cylinder on exhaust stroke. Ford and others have a 5th injector that squirts diesel straight into dpf during regen cycle.

Not convinced on the injectors over fueling though they say it is a fault with some. They can blame creatures from Mars if they want so long as they actually do something about it.

Chap who cleaned dpf out thinks it's more likely to be software or a sensor problem.

Lots of threads on piston heads about blocked dpfs seem they drill two 14mm holes with a 400mm masonry drill bit which is enough to reduce the back pressure without putting the light on

But they wont cover damaged caused by creatures from Mars or inferior fuel under warranty, that's my point.
