It’s just how it is, an adaptation. They’ve made a nice job of it I thought.

If the rear axle had been more capable I would have tried making one with the cab over the engine like the Xerion SaddleTrac. I reckon that would be good with a proper beefy rear axle.

Who knows, one day I might find one with a buggered rear axle and convert it with a Raba or Kirkstall axle.

One can dream……..

What advantage would it have over your Merc though?

Money no object, what spreader/vehicle would you have? For your job a truck type machine on 3 or 4 axles would surely be the preferred option rather than anything designed around a tractor as the ride and speed would be far better or is it more a problem because of traction/in field grip?

Big wheel diameter is the immediate advantage over truck spreaders. That’s a proper set of tyres on that Fastrac for top work, as long as the weight can be distributed reasonably well.

The Xerion was hellish heavy but it travelled really well on the 800/38 tyres. The Fastrac won’t weigh anything like the Xerion did.

Perfect machine? For me, in my area, the Big A. Money being no object wouldn’t make any difference. It’s old but still impressive. The Merc has big boots to fill.

I still have one and it’s fantastic, totally rebuilt in 2012 it ought to last all my life as a second machine. But it’s 25 years old. Spares may become an issue and I don’t want to run it into the ground.

One of the best things about truck spreaders is value for money. Anything agricultural is way too expensive and I don’t need a squillion gears or Vario or big lift capacity.

I’m happy with what I have now. The Merc can easily do 80% of what I want it to do. If customers are a bit doubtful about the tyres on it, I’ll take the Big A. It won’t be a problem unless the ground gets wet and tender.

I’m well set up now.
