Sorry Rob, I edited my post while you were writing.
They have got to a stage with young Brits that if they can get a payment they will. Watch Ski a and e and it's shocking what gets tried on , to not pay. 2 lads in a car for 3 months blagging around!
Yes you'll get a bill.
As you should , I have no.problem with paying for rescue, that's what insurance is for. The lad in question had never skied before but went with mates who had second day he is all cocky and goes down a red hits something and breaks his leg in several places no ehic and no credit card. Idiot

I was under the impression that in France the healthcare system operates under a state operated but insurance based system, which covers approx 70% of costs but citizens of France can optionally pay for a policy that covers the remainder?

I/e you will be billed for treatment but the government will reimburse you later?

Ok, so it's complicated ( it's France)
If you're resident and pay into the system , you get a carte vitale. A green coloured health card.
It pays 100% of what treatment should cost.
In effect it pays roughly 70 % of the actuall cost.
You take out a "top up" insurance, to cover the excess 30%.

When you go to the Dr. it's 25 euros. This is in your bank account before your cheque is cleared.
The state reimburse about 18 euros, the top up covers the rest.
It's not obligatoire to have a top up insurance, you can choose to pay the balance.
If you are on a low income , the state give you a basic top up insurance and you don't have to pay the 25 euro fee up front.
They are stopping the upfront fee for all people as it's " discriminatory" to the less well off.
We pay a lot more into the national insurance system here, my ni contribution for me , Mrs lbp and 2 kids ( in education) is nearly ten grand. My top up is 147 e a month. So 11 grand ish! On a rolling 3 year average of income.
What's ni self employed in the uk? Tenner a week?
