Italy's in shut down

Is it a coincidence that China and Iran have had the most cases, one is the US’s biggest economic rival the other their biggest enemy, releasing a virus far easier to do and get away with.

It's not just a coincidence. Iran is under sanction and a large swath of the population in China will not have access to high level healthcare- it's a vast country and areas can be very remote. Iran is also sizeable and some portions of the population will be dirt poor with no access to primary care.

The previous outbreaks of influenza were a lot more fatal but didn't seem to get the press this virus is having.

If this is a man-man bioweapon it is a pretty pants one although a lot of money to be made from suddenly finding a vaccine before the outbreak peters out.

Spanish flu, killed the younger, the older generation had 'some' natural immunity. I think most are agreed that it isn't going to kill 25 million people, like Spanish flu. The really scary bit, is how it's going to affect world trade, already the fronterra dairy auction has dropped substantially, due to it, whole cities are in lockdown, 1,000's ill. not working, out put will go down, as factories either slow down, or stop. Movement of goods, has already been effected, why ? price of fuel has dropped, Chinese not buying, s/mkts in the EU already have empty shelves, i'm afraid the worst is yet to come, which is the real reason, gov's are panicking. The risk of a global recession is very high.

If anybody was serious about stopping the spread of this disease then air passenger travel would have been suspended about 2 months ago.
But no, they are prepared to gamble with the lives of millions rather than upset the aviation and tourism business. Screening at airports for this disease is wholly inadequate and a joke. But what else would you expect.
It’s all about following the money!!

So how many people had the flu jab this winter?

Its being talked about here at the moment as we go into autumn. The government have ordered more than normal apparently. It wont prevent this virus of course but a flu jab could mean a hospital bed is kept open for someone that needs it.
I forget where I read it but it was quoting a couple of the early infected UK victims, they said the infection had been relatively mild as their flu jab had helped stave off the worst of it.

I was speaking to someone who has recently come back from Taiwan  . Apparently the Chinese guys he talked to were very suspicious of the new hospitals and numbers going in vs going out...

The Chinese government might be shady and totalitarian, but that is probably a strength in managing significant disease outbreaks although, according to the chap i chatted to apparently when there was last a really significant foot and mouth outbreak (i think) the beaches were awash with dead pigs that had been dumped in the sea, probably in the hope it would contaminate Taiwan...

As species jumps go, this is relatively benign. However, when you see what animals are for sale in the street market it supposedly came out of it does show the seriousness of the risk, and why everyone is a bit jumpy...

if the virus takes hold and the world shut down then the 07/8 recession was a walk in the park in comparison

to contain it shutting down regions like in Italy is the only option but that may be too late

on an individual basis wash hands do not put hands near mouth or eyes only eat hot food and drink hot drinks or those containing alcohol no ice
ok to stick with the alcohol and dispense with the rest????
