I suffered the opposite when returning a tractor to a local dealer from my local rugby club. Having mastered the stick control after some basic instruction I arrived and parked then couldn’t find the pull stop I was expecting to kill the engine. I wasn’t expecting key operated even though I have a diesel truck!

In some parts of the world having a manual vehicle is a "security device" as many "young" people are unable to drive one due to their lack of physical/mental ability or complete lack of coordination..... does not bode well for the future...

Clutch linkage snapped on a van one day when I was 15 miles from base.
Drove it back to the garage with a bit of double decluching & getting engine speed right so it slipped into gear.

young uns still havn`t a clue how I did it.
I started driving when synchromesh was a luxury

Imagine the horror if it was the 135's predecessor and you had to use the gear lever to top right to engage the starter.

Well I got in to a Fendt the other day .... and got out again to find someone who knew how to move the bloody thing.

And even a Massey got me.

No wonder my own tractor is a classic air cool Deutz with mechanical gears, handbrake and various other levers

I’m not a fan of the tractors with a joystick to do gears ... just nudging forward and back , almost had a colossal f**k up last summer borrowing a neighbours tractor with vari gears

Was totally baffled by a Cat loading shovel a few years ago - couldn’t stop the engine - you had to lift up the throttle pedal, never seen one like it since.

The guy who was going to drive it (ex farm worker) couldn't get it to start. 5ft nothing slip of a girl came out from the office, climbed in started it first time and drove off -she was married to a farmer!

He never lived it down!

That’s before you start getting into the setting for lift arms and the like

Happened to me in a lorry, no way was I handballing my load onto another lorry so did a multi drop delivery through Manchester at evening rush hour with no clutch.

Then again it takes me at least ten minutes to figure out how to move the newest tractor a few yards. Anything else is just not happening.

My mate has to keep telling his corn carters to use the foot break and not the joystick when slowing down on road !

Didn't understand half of what they were on about

I have a very old Ford Ranger that's just used on the farm. It clutch has gone so I have to start it in gear and change gear by matching engine speed to gear speed. I try to always stop facing down hill so I can start it first then let it roll to get it into gear. Must get a newer one soon.

And push the brass knob in with your calf, or it still won't start
