At one time the year started in March. That's why Sept, Oct, Nov and Dec are so named, they were the 7th 8th 9th and 10th months.
.
The Romans originally had 10 months, they ignored 60 odd days of winter.
Then 2 months were added at the start of the year this became the Julian Calendar. However February still had only 28 days.
The Gregorian calendar with leap years was adopted in most of Europe before we went to European dates.
The gregorian calendar was introduced in 1751 accompanied by general uproar as we lost a lot of days.
The year 1751 was only 9 months having started on the 25th March and ended 31st January
Then to cap it all Wednesday the 2nd September 1752 was followed the next day by Thursday the 14th september
Confused, well many were especially as it meant rent payments came early!
The uproar was so great in Norfolk that they never accepted the second change and so Michaelmass day celebrated on 29th. September in the rest of the country is the 11th. October in Norfolk. No fools these turnip crunchers since that is the day they pay their rent!

Thought I had been forgotten, then I too had that envelope. I now know how Charlie felt :)
Thank you very much to all.
Great pictures and very well worth the cost ;)
I am certainly happy to pay next year
