Never reckon to do it until the 'reminder card' that threatens you with an inspection shows up in the new year

So, how come I've had time work out what we've got, and where, and subtract a few 'dead 'un dockets' from the kennels and account for the handful of screws in the yard, write up all the AML1 forms, etc, etc, :scratchhead:

Well, I'll come clean - I cheated...........

...........Well, not really but we had a RPA sheep inspection about 10 days ago :banghead: so I had to do all the above then. The movement book has never been so up to date

Any road, in the same post was this.....

I had an inspection a few days ago, as did a relative next door to me also with sheep. Apparently they’ve done a lot of whole farm inspections in the area in the last few weeks too

Never had one here before.

Apparently a computer spits your holding number out (a bit like ERNIE) and they have to do it within 48 hours. Ours was the second one she'd done that day, so it sounds like they're busy.

2 farms I do contract work for (but don’t look after the paperwork) had inspections on the same day last month. This has made me get mine up together, I now have a spreadsheet of of every sheep so all I have to do is take them off the list when they die or sell (I bet I forget the first one 🙄). All ewes are double tagged and the replacements written up, I feal like a real goody two shoes 😊. I’ve been sent 2 of the forms to fill in one is for nextdoor but has my name on and the other is has my name and a random holding number.

would software likes of farm matters make things easier for your system ? costs a bit each year but its easy to use and it sorts everything out in the background without you doing anything apart from clicking a few tabs ....

I had a good one yesterday, lass rang up from some defra office wanting to come and inspect the walls that were done under capital works. These were done 10 years ago! I said your more than welcome but how are you going to tell what was and wasn’t rebuilt as they have all greened over now. She had no idea that it was 10 years ago they were claimed. Then she mentioned some bracken control As well. I asked how she was going to prove that said area was sprayed 10 years ago?? She said she would land out and tick a box to get it off the system. sounds like there’s a lot of people in offices starting to look for something to do with all these inspections.

Easy money isn't it, big estate claiming £500k bps, easy to pay a persons wage with a couple of infringements.

Easy money but are the big boys not more on the ball with paper work and things when there on such a large scale. Many having people just to do paper work. It’s the people with only a handful that haven’t got a clue about what needs recorded and what doesn’t.

Probably but it only take one movement form to walk off. Very big place near me sacked the shepherd, had an inspection a couple of month later and there was 3 movements for 1 sheep each time “missing” that cost them a far bit of money.

I had the guy out, count every group 4 times to make sure, 3 of us counting too. I was 1 ewe short out of 2034 head compared to what my diary, flock book and Agriwebb all said. Nice guy in the end who had no knowledge of agriculture but was just a numbers guy, had a good chat with him after it all. Circa 14 hours he was on farm / counting.

Rumour round here has it that a 'thousand acre-ish' arable place with just a few sheep on a few small, awkward fields had some tags missing on some bought in sheep. Didn't have any red tags to say they were going to put in as replacements so got fined a big chunk of their BPS money as a result :inpain:

No wonder the first thing Velcourt et al do when taking over a new place is offload the Livestock.

What's going to be the stick when bps ends?

That's the only reason there will be something to replace it
Yes, it is known as fines or fixed penalty notices. Much like is used to apply compliance pressure on pretty much every other aspect of modern life, be it motoring offences, Covid none compliance offences, submitting VAT and self assessment returns or breaching health and safety rules.... I can think of very few, if any, circumstances outside agriculture where compliance pressure from the state comes from the threat of having a payment withheld.

Yes. What I should have written was if there is going to be something to replace bps it will only be so they can take it away to control farmers not to try and help us even though they will dress it up as help.
Not that it is definitely being replaced so that it can be used to control farmers.
