It's turning black and looks like it will fall off, should I pull it off or leave it?

I pinched my finger in two bits of metal on the mower, half the nail has gone black, and the end closest in where the nail grows from has a gap now between the end of the nail and my finger. It was hurting a bit but now just feels cold on top. Not sure whether it's better to tape around it and leave it a few weeks to see what happens or try and cut around it an prise it off?

dropped a bit of angle iron on my foot a few years back. nail went black
just kept it clean a few weeks later a good soaking one night the. dead bit of nail fell off

Tape it on for now. It will come off when the new nail has come away underneath?

I have found the nails that I have grown as replacements seem to be better than the couple of originals I have left.
