I am interested in a machine advertised by James Murrell in Norwich. Anybody know him and comment on how safe I would be buying without travelling across the country to view the machine.

I know him but not very well. We've bought stuff of him and he's as sound as a pound. He comes from a family of farmers, he farms a council holding and his relatives farm near by.
Not the cheapest but very honest imho.

Go and visit the machine. Its not that far

I've done a repair job on a JCB excavator and found him a very honest and approachable bloke. Didn't cut any corners on the repair, paid the invoice promptly and always got a cup tea when finished.
