Tbf, subsidies do distort markets and prices. But the fact is, govts all round the world actively want to distort markets and prices which is why they invented them and persist with them. They’re a fact of life. They’re in every aspect of life. Hell, the NHS is entirely subsidy based. But for some reason only agricultural subsidies are deemed to be disgusting.
Acreage payments have totally distorted the land market

It doesn't here, Veg growers distort the land rental market, people moving from the city distort the land and property market.
This farms value isn't linked to price of food or subsidies, it's value is determined by location and view.
Acreage payments inflate land values everywhere

Just watching clips of farms in Ukraine ( the bread basked of Europe ) didn’t see any bunded fuel tanks / spray set ups / didn’t see any filed margins , didn’t see much health n safety. How is anything a level playing field in any way ? Edge to edge corn , I’ve not even see. Any wildlife other than the odd crow

So. Referring back to @Janet Hughes Defra last post which contained a few short term sticky plaster fixes... why if the strategic direction issued was to move away from area payments to quote you directly are DEFRA implementing area payments for SFI, new CS agreements and probably LR and LNR etc... my appologies Janet if i and others get agitated on these forums when delivered policy seems to be mirroring the old system but in an even more bureaucratic way... 1st Jan 2028 is the end of BPS... interim measures are far from delivering a productive, stable and profitable farming industry at present and that is whilst ignoring Ukraine for now?

Certainly won’t be importing from such countries going forward. Gove said it, so it must be true🤪

During the stalin imposed famine of 1930-33, virtually every living thing was eaten for food, including some humans.
Hence no wildlife now.

Doing without subsidies would be fine if all our competitors were doing the very same but that simply is not the case, you wouldn't find any other English business trying to compete with competitors in the EU & our devolved areas where they are being subsidised for production & we are not.
did find lots trying to do that, and they have now closed or moved abroad!

@Janet Hughes Defra needs to explain why that cant happen. It has been intimated that it is for purely political reasons. We need to 'do things differently', Brexit and all that.

(If that is the case, then fine, there's no reason why SFI standards can't be written that are 'the same but different'.)
Should have just carried in with HLS.
Was up and running and problems were about ironed out.

The whole problem has come a out from them trying to make a scheme based about carbon on our soils.

You can't be in receipt of subsidies and still be financially independent.

And what gives the market the excuse to pay such poor prices, is that subsidies allow farmers to sell cheaper.
You can never be financially independent when you are buying your inputs and selling your produce into a globally subsidised environment, either remove them worldwide or each country will need its own version
