.....and continuing support through the new system after we leave at the end of the year.

No details yet, broad brush approach and a lot of work to do yet!

It will need to be the same level for a lot longer than that, or farmer need to get a bigger share of the final shop prices as nfu Scotland chief said today. Either one thing or the other. So what will it be, some kind of safety net sub for everyone, not some guy getn 200grand and some one getn 5, they could save money buy capping it to 60000 grand max and help the smaller family places. Or we get double for what we produce, simple.

Agree it needs capping,Why because I get fed up of experts saying small farms are not viable ,so If scale is the answer is large sub payments needed.Everyone I talk to can’t do without the sub.On another note I would like to see cattle sub return on a headage Payment Why again fed up of hearing cattle get a sub only if you have land.

Cattle don’t get a sub even if you have land, the land does. You don’t need to keep cattle on it, or anything else.

I’m willing to bet that there will never be headage payments again, unless there is a war or famine that threatens the UK’s food security again.

There still is in Scotland, we get €100 for a beef calf. Meant to be €130 this year with convergence top up.

Yes, l saw it on farming news uk, saying as longs farmers receive such a low price, there would need to be some kinda safety net payment made or prices would need to go up on farm gate price to offset the sub lose.

The industry needs a drastic shift in how it does business, including a review of market pricing and contracts, the curtailing food imports and ending excessive regulation. It needs all these things far far more than any amount of magic money.
The whole industry is stifled by the ‘magic money’. We need huge reform that farmers need to get together and lead. There will be casualties.

Gracious man, the UK voted to leave the EU and CAP. So curtailing food imports and less regulation are hardly on the agenda now. I do wonder at times. But I may well be wrong, time will tell. I may have to eat my filo pastry hat at some stage.

Your in for one hell of a shock if direct subs go!

For starters there will still be an acre payment for stewardship, that will put a base in land rents and will be around £50/60 acre for low input farming and arable land that is put back to low input grassland will get a lot more than this so there is no way in hell that you will get land rent free or even landowners paying you to farm the land!

3 billion a year keeps the bloated and shambolic NHS running for about 10 days a year so perhaps that needs reforming first before you destroy the farming industry by removing subs!

Oh and without direct subs most beef/sheep farms would quit and the fallout from that would mean a much lower UK grain price.

Also when NZ scrapped direct subs ( they still get in- direct subs ) farm input prices went up dramatically!

Could you make a profit with no subs but rents at £60 acre with grain at £80t and prices of fert/ machinery etc 30/40% higher than todays prices ajd32??

You have jumped to an awful lot of conclusions in that post, as usual.

And you have also jumped to a lot of conclusions on this thread and another one as well.................

If you think that direct subs being stopped is a good thing for the industry you are badly mistaken!

Rules/ regs etc wont be relaxed in the UK if direct subs go!

Of course they won’t be relaxed. I think subsidies for owning land don’t help farmers or the tax payer who pays them.

Farming is the principle industry where stability and predicability from government matter the most, given the unpredictable nature of the rest of it. Given the politicians still have no real clue what 2021 will be like, it's only right they stand up now and say nothing will change next year.

Subs paid on land by the taxpayer ensures they have a year round supply of cheap food!

Landowners are not going to think: Oh there is no direct area payment so I will let my land out rent free/ pay someone to farm it for me! ( which is clearly what you are hoping for/expecting )

Every other developed country in the world subs their AG industry's either directly or in-directly so if UK direct or in-direct subs were stopped there is no way UK farmers could compete with Imports from these country's and thus the UK AG industry would all but be destroyed!

Area payments have nothing to do with food supply. Every land owner in the country could claim payments and not produce food.
