Costello certainly lived up to the high specific weight, if not the yield

Diego never had great yield, but consistently had good yield. It's the consistency that marked it out, these newer varieties haven't been around long enough to be consistent. Having said that, Costello is a good shout.

Costello outperformed Diego for me this year.

Growing both again this year but more Costello than Diego, it was the other way round last year.

Good point.

This is because Diego's unique in being able to do well with hardly any photosynthesis.

In 2012 it did well here with hardly any sunshine, and in 2016 it did well with hardly any flag leaf.

In our latest summary of wheat results, Costello has by far the highest spec weight of the feeds. Followed in second place by.....JB Diego.

I introduced Graham as a replacement for Diego after it became an ever more hungry variety. Early drilling, good disease scores & wanted by my local flour mills for low grade blending into bread making grists.

When I was at a summer variety trial. I asked the question about what to replace Diego with. The expert asked what I was looking for, I said good bushel weight, consistency and lots of good straw. His answer was to grow .....diego!

I was Lilly first wheats, Diego second this year, surprisingly the yield monitor was consistantly at 10T/ha though all, then the 6ac field of 1st wheat Costello after beans which I had intended to be my Diego replacement.. 8T/ha Its not on my plans for this season..

Diago 3.9 t looked like 3.5 t Graham looked like 5 t did 3.5 diago always seams to do well. Agronomist wants me to try Costello to

Costello is great as you can always sell quality. A big barn buster it’s not but as a safe bet it’s pretty damn good with an average spend, plan for that and it will do you well.
