JCB 4220 compared to 3230 xtra

Other than speed what are the main differences between the JCB 4220 and the 2017 plate 3230 xtras?

We have had the 4220 on demo and really liked it and were amazed at how comfortable it was on the road even with our Simba DTX hanging off the back of it, but the issue we have is that we are in very heavy clay and when we put it on our single leg mole plough it stoped it solid not having the grunt to get it to move...

Iv not heard to much about the 3230's and as they are a similar Hp was wondering if anyone could tell me what the in field abilities are in comparison to the 4220.

Thanks

We used to have a 3230X Tier 3 and a 4220. 3230 has now gone for a second 4220.

We are on heavy clay but never pulled a mole drainer with it so can't comment on that, however pulled a subsoiler with it - we've never pulled our single leg mole with less than 280hp since our old Fiat steel track machine went years ago.

However if a 4220 wouldn't pull it I doubt a 3230 would, they are nearly identical power. Did you definitely have 4220 in low box, as I've always run out of traction before power?

The 4000 will run rings around the 3000 in the field due to it's ability to quickly change speed at the ends, turning circle, cvt etc.

Sounds like an 8000 might be worth a look?

According to JCB:
4220:
6.6ltr
235hp
950Nm

3230X
7.4ltr
230hp
949Nm

So I very much doubt the 3230 will outpull a 4220.
IIRC, the 3230 is limited on power to protect the driveline, hence the 4000s better spec from a smaller engine.

Not got the grunt or not got the traction. Two very different things on the back that have very different affects on the tractor. Is the mole trailed or mounted?

I thought 3230s boost to 270hp?
Would a weight deck on the back not help traction?
Does anyone know if or when the 3000 series will be updated?

They do but only in D4,5 and 6 (top gears on the road). Otherwise they're 230.

I'm told a deck weight would definitely help traction, although we don't bother as don't do that much heavy draft with them. You do have to spend the time setting the tyres etc to the right pressure and adding weight to get the best from them.

Thanks for the feed back. Well i wasn't actually driving at the time, i was working elce where but our worker was on it and he says he was in low box but im not 100% convinced due to the face he says the wheels didn't even spin haha.

We currently run a John Deere 7230R which i believe boosts to 250hp and that is on knees at times, both with power and traction depending on conditions (we have a home made 3t weight block which we put on which is not ideal really).

The 7R is absolutely terrible on the road anything would be better in that respect ;)

Just from a visual point of view the 3230's just seem a bigger machine so thought they might be able to get the power down better?.

Also following on from Charlie's comment, do you recon they will update the 3000 series or has the 4000's taken there place?

From memory the 3 and the 4 are approximately the same weight, certainly within 200kgs, although my Xtra was a tier 3 which was on smaller tyres than the 4000s. I believe the Tier 4 Xtras are on the same size as the 4000s.

Unless the tractor was weighted and pressured to the absolute optimum I'm very surprised it ran out of power before grip.

Yes i was surprised, but to be fair to the 4000 we had had a few weeks of sun so the ground was rock solid, not the best conditions for a mole but we only had it for a limmited amount of time and wanted to see what it could do.

I believe the 4160 is on a slightly different chassis to the higher models think its carried some of the old 2000 series along with it?
