Looked at old E reg jcb telehandler for sale ,nice old machine but there was oil on the water filler cap.
Couldn’t see any sighs of water in the engine oil and it ran well with no smoke ,what’s people’s thoughts ,should I walk away ?

4 speed is it?
Get it warm and see if shuttle sticks in gear?
Transmission issues if pack not been upgraded possibly?
Yes it’s 4 speed ,Don’t get me more worried about more problems ,oil on the water cap is enough!
Will do what you say didn’t give it much of a test was losing the light, will have to go back and give it a better run ,if it’s not sold .

Could just be that the transmission oil cooler has gone at some point and been replaced. This drops oil into the coolant and makes a right mess. Just done one on my g reg 3cx, and still a film of oil in the coolant, going to change it again.

Is it a big undertaking fixing a dragging clutch in a 525 58 @ACEngineering

Would be a complete gearbox overhaul, so All new seals, clutch plates, pump and converter etc could also run to new bearings, bore and sleeve the casings, new gearstick turret as they are bad for corrosion and wear. Could also have plastic clutch pack pistons which WILL need to be upgraded to aluminium along with any plastic thrust washers etc

So yeah it could run to a few grand easy by time you finished, bound to want new transmission mounts too, possibly weld up the trans mounting bracket, maybe an oil cooler and hoses etc

Its a 25 plus year old machine so could easy lead to all the above. If its tidy and in good shape then no reason not to blow the money on fixing it IMO But if its a nail already then i would invest that money in to another machine, more costly in the short term but i hate throwing good money at a nail.

Regular problem of Transmission Cooler leaking from memory it is on back of radiator and prone to leaking in that area

How’s it piped to get from transmission to coolant ?and if that happens surely water gets in the transmission and could this go unnoticed till the transmission dies? Thanks

Assuming it is the same 4 speed t/c transmission, (I don't really know the 520-4) It look like this coolant pipes on the big ends, oil pipes on the small ones. Fractures inside and yes water gets in to the oil and oil into water. As long as the coolant and oil flushed and changed, shouldn't be a problem. I don't think you would be able to run one for long without sorting it.

And if Shuttle and pack got to come out ,you got to take engine out also as mainframe blocks easy drop apparently too?

I think the thread has gone off slight different direction now and on about a jcb 525-58 transmission. You can leave engine in place on these just put some blocks under sump and drop transmission on floor and pull out.

I was on the wrong track - the radiator that was piggy backed on the Coolant Radiator that always leaked was the Hydraulic System Radiator, visible by peering through rear grill

There’s oil in the water ,been told that the filter housing can leak oil in to water system ,any one had this experience on a Perkins .

Its possible but unlikely. It's almost always the timing case corroded sometimes just water pump.

I have done a 525-58 timing case with engine in place and its bloody awkward?
