JCB Loadall gearbox usability

In our telehandler fleet, we have:

2001 JCB 530/70 - here since 2yo, now a bit over 10,000hrs, blissfully simple and one of the most reliable machines we have ever owned. Bit slow in the hydraulics, and gets hot if pushed hard, but perfectly capable still. 40k, turbo, air con, 3t 7m etc.

2005 TM300 - here from new, less than 100hrs from hitting 10,000hrs - very nearly as reliable as the 530, and worked harder generally, very handy, liked by all, but tiring now. In many ways more user friendly than the 310s or 320s that it will likely be replaced with

Recent aquisition - 2012 536/70 - 5000hrs - decent hydraulics, (constant pump for bucket brush useful), plenty of power and a nice enough place to work, but wtf is that joystick about? Which comedian thought that the neutral button (dump switch, call it what you will) ought to move from the very convenient usable position under your little finger, to the top of the stick? How can I use the boom or auxillary rollers while my finger is on the dump? Do the desingers ever listen to feedback or drive the things??

Whats the crack with the gearbox? Why, on this fine earth, does a simple, used by everyone machine like a telehandler need three transmission modes? The bloody thing is always changing gear!! Surely it'll die much quicker than the 530? Surely an extra click on the twist grip, so it was 1234A would be fine? (A being 5th and 6th) Its also annoying that reverse (in every mode) is a gear slower than forward - 2nd is too slow backwards, 4th often too fast forward for close work.
Our other machines have almost perfect gear ratios- on the 536 3rd is often too slow, 4th too fast. Progress eh? Really not warming to this one at all. Maybe I'm just a grumpy sod!

Yes your a grumpy old sod, not sure what exactly is on a 2012 joystick, but on our 2015 model I just flick it into neutral using the forward and reverse rocker switch on the back of the joystick, using a finger leaving the thumb to do the rest of the work. Get on very well with the joystick, but I suppose I would after years of battling with the Sandersons 4 levers!

As for the transmission I always have it in manual mode, never in auto, I don't like the way it bangs in when I don't want it to change gear especially on the road, also it will leave it in 4th when I think 3rd is more suitable, but yes when its in 3rd and change to go backwards it drops down to second which can feel abit slow.

Haven't the latest JCBs got a simpler gear selection now? We have a 10,000 hour Manitou, and I looked at the new JCB hydrastatic/mechanical gearbox,I thought it looked quite impressive. How good it will be long term ,who knows?Rest of machine ok ,but not up to new Manitou standards, especially the cab and for me the two steps rather than one into it.

Haha thanks. That shuttle button underneath is ok for changing direction, but a faff for holding neutral for a couple of seconds - booming out when heaping spuds or loading a wagon for example - the long 'trigger' on the other two is far handier, and given nearly everything we have has a left hand shuttle, that's where my hand naturally wants to go to change direction.
Manual is ok, but it won't let you have 6th gear, so auto a necessity on the road. Ballache. Simple = better on such a machine, its a royal pita explaining it all to everyone already, and its only been here a month!!

I'm kinda with you on the forward and reverse gear difference, it really is a pita.

Don't bother with auto, il decide which cog I want. I'm not a fan of the torque lock in 5th & 6th either.

Clutch dump is switchable on the brake pedal on mine (2013). Good for loading lorries.

I like the rest of the machine though

@ACEngineering Haven't investigated where all the oil pipes are (if all internal, then guess it makes it impossible). If an external pipe is accessible, then wonder if simply a restrictor would improve things.

As you might have guessed, it's just a theory at the moment 🤔

Threads containing the words: 'JCB' and 'gearbox' or 'transmission' are why people buy Claas or Merlo.
I've got a Claas and there are 1 or 2 good things about it but the gearbox isn't one.Maybe it's because I have always used powershift but I find hydrostatics the work of the Devil. Or at least the ones in the Claas and Manitou.

Hydrostatics are boss. It's slower on the road- doesn't really matter anyway because of the advantages they give in work. Smooth and none of this hold-me-on-the-brakes-or-i'll-take-out-that-wall-mate...

Our claas is painful on the road. I could walk quicker on hills on the yard it rolls and doesn't hold, it's unpredictable, you have to rev hard to get it to move and so it then drinks diesel. I dream of having a powershift again I will never touch a hydrostat again.
