Hi I have a Jd 2140 sg2 4wd and when in pto it falls out. As if it should be in a detent. Have read other posts and they mention that it is linked to problems with the hi-lo. But that works absolutely fine. Any suggestions

Now Then..
If you remove the plate from the cab floor (8 screws), you'll see the PTO spool actuating lever and linkage. Remove the E shaped clip and then try operating it from there.. Then report back..

Put the pto in and move between hi and low and see if it kicks out .
Then try moving between 2 and 4 wheel drive .
If the pto kicks out when operating the hi / low then there is a leak in the hi / low .
If it kicks out when selecting 2 WD then you have a leak in the 4 wheel drive pack .
This is a quick test to determine if and where any possible leak may be as the Pto , hi /low and 4 wheel drive all share the same low pressure oil circuit .
Once identified which systems trips the fault then you can decide on a course of action.
If it’s the 4 WD then check the solenoid then , if needed, the 4 wd pack can be dropped out the bottom ,stripped and resealed without splitting the tractor .
Anything else it will likely need cab off and split and you are as well reselling everything once in there .

We had this on a 3350 years ago and had main dealer out in anticipation of new hi/low,turned out to be adjustment on the pto lever ?‍♂️
