JD 3800 loader good or bad??

I’ve been looking at a clean 06 3800 loader. Have no experience of loaders. Are they as good as other makes of similar age??

Ok it would only be 200 acres a year thought it might be fit for it

We did 15yrs ago ran duals on it. Fine with trailed forager. Wouldn't consider now with big sp forager.

ya jf900 is all we are using that’s why I was thinking of going that route it would be great around yard rest of the time

They are a bitch to start on a cold day and anyone who tells you different is lieing ( and I have one to sell!) they draw a lot of power to start so your battery needs to be cock on. 2 fixes for this is add another battery or remove the isoltator as in led to believe this causes issues.

You need air con because you don’t want to be folding the doors back it’s a really crap system for that.

Someone across the valley ran them for probably 15 years pushing in behind SP harvester and loved it.

They are a brilliant machine depending on what you want them to achieve. By modern standards they do now lack some luxuries ie boom suspension

We bought a 1 in December, and after asking around expected starting problems on a cold day.
However the previous owner had replaced the original, presumably mechanical fuel pump with a 12v Facet fuel pump
Starts straight away without any hesitation, even with a layer of frost on it.

We replaced a Matbro TR250
No comparison, but it is 10 years newer
Lots of leaky ram seals on ours, and have done the engine mounts, but no more than you would expect on a 2005 machine
But overall a good machine

Start fine with a 4.2kw iskra starter assuming everything else is spot on of cause.

Personally I dont like them but each to there own. Alot love them.

We have a 2002 3800 with about 12000 hrs on it, great machine, had it since about 2006. Have looked at replacing it but it just keeps going. It is rough on uneven ground compared to new jcbs.
The pipes to the headstock are routed up the middle of the boom and the boom has to come off to replace them. We have a heavy duty battery and a different starter and it starts a lot better now.
Great cab with good visibility, you get used to the high boom position.
Joystick very expensive £1500+.
I saw a very low hour ed one for sale for £40k. Mine is v tidy and was offered £ 15k to trade against a jcb 320, it won’t leave the farm it will be kept as backup if we buy a new one.
