Good evening everyone,

March -April time next year I am going to be taking the big step and going contracting on my own.

My niche is going to be that I want to help small farms, small holders and paddock work.

I don't want to be spending £100,000 plus on 1 piece of kit. I want to be doing small bales, ground work, topping, fert spreading, bit of spraying as needed, rolling etc etc.

Now here is my dilemma, all 3 of the above are in my initial start up budget range of 9-10k but I'm torn. They all have plus and minus points. (I'm a Massey man at heart)

Could I ask your opinions please. 3065 I've had experince with. JD5400 I have encountered as an apprentice for JD and never really saw many of them and the SAME not heard anything bad , hopefully some sage words of advice will come my way.

Thanks Chris

I think the massy would be a stronger built tractor, just my opinion, I’ve owned a jd5400& a same explorer albeit a 90 model, both seemed a far lighter duty machine than the 3065 a friend had. If you were lucky enough to drop on a John Deere 6200 at sensible money then I think in that size of tractor and price bracket it would take some beating, just my views of course!

We had a 3065. Best tractor we ever owned. It had the A-B transmission. Sold it with 12.000 hours because the 4WD shaft was snapped off due to a broken bearing. I still wish we kept it and repaired it. It was a little pocket rocket machine. And due it size very handy around the yard. Also pretty "modern" for that time with the electronics.

Like @daveydiesel1 mentioned. If you can, a 3075 would even be better with the dynashift box.

Id go the same 80 to be fair. Had lots of experience with a 90. They didnt give much trouble, true 4 wheel breaking and great gripping. Remember the gearstick coming off in your hand more than once. Creep box as standard to cos you never know when that could be useful

And the steering lock is amazing around tight stuff, I actually have no clue as to what we'd replace our 90 with,, that I wouldn't get irate with for being "a sail boat"

3085/95 won’t take much more room to handle than a 3075.

However a 6190 is very little bigger than that. Then a 6480 T2 is the same size. But in saying that if you can cope with the small chassis 64, no reason you couldn’t manage with a 6490.

When your that far you may as well get a 6499 as it’s the same size..

So In summary you should buy a Fendt 939.

Like I say I'm a Massey Man and the general consensus seems to be that route.
I just couldn't bring myself to buy a Fendt

Explorer 80, better still a 90 if the budget stretches that far. The turbo wakes them up a bit.

Ok I have had a damn hard think and I'm throwing in the JD6200
I always liked the 6100 when I was a apprentice for JD in 1997-98 and the issues we had with them were slim to none.
What does everyone think?
There are a couple about in budget for sure.

You will find 6300/6400 quicker.

So you're initial "9 to 10k" startup was based on hours then, not pound notes... 🤔
You're not on your own..., it will be a bouncy shiny 50k (speed...) before long 😆
