JD 6220 won't start after sitting for 6 months, have changed starter and battery for new ones. It turns over but doesn't seem like it's quite fast enough and sounds like it doesn't have compression. Has diesel up to the injectors. It drove in the shed but cant get it to start now! Any advice of what to try?

Had a 6620 similar after only couple of months!! Cleaned all battery cable ends and earthpoints, had to use jumpleads from another tractor and in the end had to give it a slight whiff of naughty drugs!! Fired instantly and was ok on its own battery afterwards!! Never quite worked out why!! Brake cleaner is easier on an engine as opposed to easy start and will usually work aswell. As long as you have a good swing over both are ok if used sensibly and used during cranking.

Not sure which engine need to look tomorrow, it just belched out black smoke with the easy start, wouldn't fire
Does it have one or two fuel filters at the side of the engine?
If there’s smoke there’s some compression, if its been cranking slowly for a long time it can fill the combustion chambers in the tops of the pistons with fuel, this will prevent any additional fuel igniting when it’s injected and just keeps adding to the problem.

I think it just has one filter but would need to double check, do we need to disconnect the fuel supply and crank it till they empty?

Is it diesel not contaminated with something heavier?

If you have diesel at the injectors it should make some attempt to fire?
Jump leads directly onto the starter or booster to give it a proper spin.

Conventional injector pump?
Double check the stop solenoid wiring on the pump.

It’s a 2 valve engine then.
Just remove the wire to the stop solenoid on the pump, give it plenty of heat (hold the key in with the ignition on) and crank it till it stops smoking (no more the 30 second at a time so the starter can cool) put jump leads so you’ve got plenty of cranking speed.
Once it’s cleared up re-connect the solenoid, plenty of heat and try again.
