Have my father in laws JD 6430 standard here for silage this week.

I Was wondering what hp is this tractor? Goes ok, but thought it would be further apart from my old NH on the same job.
And is that much difference to a Premium one?
All blue here so not totally clued up on green ones.
Definitely holds in oil better than my blue ones. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

what reg?

i thought they were around 120 bhp and a bit more for the premium?

i quite like that one when had but on lugging jobs it really showed it was a 4 cylinder.

There only meant to be 120 engine think they claimed 100 odd at the shaft. Premium is 125hp i think plus 15 or 20 boost. Possibly a the engine is physically slightly different but i cant remember.
Backend is different, bigger oil pump, cab is a bit different, gearbox is sometimes different depending on the spec of the standard.
Standard 63/6430s never have the same life about them as the premiums

Its a 13 reg with 3000hrs on it
Standard is 120hp thats it. Premium would be 120 or 125 (for a late one) before boost. So yeah, the Standard will feel very flat.

Had it here carting silage with a Marshall 11 ton trailer, I never drove it this year, but my mate reckoned it was very "revy" with not enough torque compared to his old 6400.

Previous years its been carting along with my 7840 dual power(no turbo) on same trailers, and very surprisingly to me the old NH can out pull the JD no problem, and even more amazing given the smoke the NH throws up, the NH used less diesel over a day.
On paper the JD should be a better pulling tractor, 4cylinder or not.
Not looking to start a JD bash, but wasn't sure exactly what Hp it should be.

That said its not a bad tractor and is comfy to run, never run a premium so can't compare.

The 7840 is 7.5 litres the 6430 is only 4.5 litres

I agree with you, 7840 is 6.6 litres yes, but only a 100hp not 120.
The 4 cylinder turbo guys will tell you the the figures don't lie, and if it gives more it gives more no matter how many pistons it has.

Not fussed, it was just my mate who ran it reckoned his old 6400 had more pull which made me wonder if I was guessing the hp wrong.

There's no reason why it shouldn't be as good as a 6400 - it's basically the same engine - need to get it on a dyno and turn it up a bit.

The 6 cylinder should have more low down torque.

Standard v Premium basically, I’m not sure if tractordata gives more information?

6400 will be a lighter tractor maybe? So will feel a bit fitter. Problem is when you stick the same engine in a heavier tractor it feels flat
Six cylinder engines in general are much better for road hauling as once you loose revs in a four you are straight down the gears
