JD or Case in the 130 to 140hp bracket?

Hello all

Looking at changing our 6420s for a more powerful machine as it can't quite boss the unipress or plough in tough land and we want to get on faster, but at the same time we to keep to tractors that are relatively light and small.

Have had a 6125r on hire for last two summers and it's great to drive and has pretty much what we need although it's sometimes on the power limit and could do with another 5 to 10hp.

Several of our neighbours have case Mx140's and we hear good things but these people are unlikely to admit if it was a pup anyway. Local dealer is very competitive on price and has an excellent reputation with a lot of machines out around us.

So I am looking at JD 6125R & M, 6140M and Case Mx140 MC all around the 5.5t bracket and unboosted do 125 to 140hp. I am ignoring IPM and other boosts because I need good low down lugging on a plough and unipress. I think I have sorted the different HP's so I can do a baseline comparison.

Any thoughts on the MX140 in-particular as Case is an unknown to us.

Any thoughts on the basic 6140M. Would still hire a harvest tractor (6125R) as well so don't need all the toys on ours hence looking at the M series.

Sorry for the war and peace type of post

I would get a 6140m on demo or hire, not impressed with my 6150r's torque,it just hasn't got any!

JD have told me my tractor will be getting a software update in November.

The way I see it JD are falling behind with the top of their 4cyl offerings, how about something like valtra n163, fendt 516, claas or massey who are all offering 150hp and more in a lightweight and versatile 4cyl, we demo'ed a 516 to replace a 6830 premium and it would probably be on par and has held its own against a JD 6150 and Arion 620 on demo, if we werent wanting to move up the hp a bit it would've definetely been a contender

There is a lot to be said in favour of these machines and aren't to be underestimated but I do feel JD need to up their game and put 155hp into a 4cyl shell and likewise 170hp without ipm into the smaller 6cyl frame, they are just treading water at the moment and as with anything if you aren't leading the competition you are behind them

I know you haven't mentioned it but don't be tempted by the 6130 JD, waste of time IMO why they thought a 4 cyclinder in a 6 cyclinder chassis was a good idea is beyond me. I have been looking for a while and have decided to find a 6630 for a short term answer, although I did climb up into a 5 series fendt recently!

Fendts - lovely machines, great hp:kg ratio but out of our budget. Would like a 415 but even 2nd hand ones with 1900 hrs on are £65,000. If we were buying a mainline machine I would look at this but we are still aiming to hire our prime mover.

6130 - agree, what really is the point particularly given that the HP offered is so low compared to other makes.

Puma - too big and heavy for what we want. Father is VERY focused on weight or lack of it.

6140M - have heard that they lack guts and similar of the other 6 cylinder JDs. Must say the 6125R we have on hire is a gutsy little bugger, just would have hoped for more HP.

Agree that JD long way behind other makes with the 4 cylinder machines and even the parameters for the IPM are quite limiting when compared to a case which will boost when the hydraulic drive is in.

As to why the choice has been limited to JD and Case, I am not sure I have a very good answer. We have a 6420s and it's been a brilliant little workhorse, light and gutsy and generally reliable. We did have a gearbox problem but JD helped with that. JD sales and support are excellent in our area with Tuckwells and BB available to us so there is some of the "what you know" factor. Plus we hire from BB and like the JD but would be concerned about getting good warranty because the number of alarms and errors you get in a day is incredible and worrying. On the plus side they keep you awake. Neighbour has broken his hire 7R series pretty much every year and it's not exactly being challenged.

Case are ever growing presence in the area, they have a great reputation as being a lot of machine for your money but the resale seems to be lower than the JD and we have no experience. But, local man us good and keen and our neighbour is a savvy man and he buys case and hires JD - what does that tell you?

Massey - dad does not like (don't know why ) Valtra unknown to us and not sure of the backup available, NH - well the red version seems better built and cheaper.

So really it's HP:KG ratio that counts, keeping it light for top work but the power available with ballast if we needed it.

Tolstoy has nothing on me for verbal diarrhoea!

why not consider the maxxum 140 then would be lighter than a puma

That's what we are looking at and was interested in people's views. Seems a lot of machine for the money and well liked, but all those we know who have them have near blind brand loyalty so are not overly objective.

That is why it is so important for you to get a demo so you can make your own informed choice

Will be trying a MX140 for sure and will try a 6140M as well - know the 6125R well. I would like to look at an MF but as they say "you need permission from the bill payer" and he is not interested, why I don't know as his cousin has 3 and really likes them.

140 maxxum good tractor and should outmuscle 6125r a better match to the 6140m, deere will be slightly more refined cab a little thirstier but no much difference in running costs really dowm to personal choice in the end

CNH on my doorstep are in blue livery so I'm not too familiar with the names of Case ranges, is the maxxum 140 4 or 6cyl? If you're thinking 6140m they are the same size as the 6150 so surely better kg/hp ratio but isnt say a puma155 similar weight to a 6150? I know they look big but they aren't completely numb IME of NH T6 series.

worth a look at a MF 6614, get one one farm and let him judge then.
