Anybody in Yorkshire know about these guys?

Watching the viners on Inside the Factory. Talk of them growing 77 square miles of peas! At 50,000ac that sounded humongous!

Looking at their website they mention:

“Hartley’s have been growing peas around Knottingley and Tadcaster since 1954 and for good reason. Yorkshire is perfect pea country and with over 20,000 hectares on our doorstep, we can process crops locally in under 150 minutes, clocking up a minimum of food miles.”

Just wondered.....

Best student job I ever had taking pea samples for Findus throughout Lincolnshire rallying around farm tracks in a MK 1 Escort and getting paid a rediculous amount of money as well.

Sounds great

I did the same job in Essex. In a knackered Toyota hilux! Didn't get paid a ridiculous amount of money unfortunately.

I started early in morning. What time did you start?

Met the viners at midnight for hot meal in the field then at first field by 2am back to factory by 6.30 and breakfast in the canteen by 7am. Test results out by 8am telling viners which fields to harvest first. It was the mileage allowance that made the job worthwhile.

That sounds more fun than driving a viner .i spent a summer after university driving a viner maximum working speed 1 mph and at that most of the peas went out the back. However got to see the world or at least saw bits of Rutland as well as Lincolnshire. I am able bore my kids with ' see that field in 1988 i harvested peas in it'

Hartley’s have 100% control of how are peas are grown and harvested selecting up to 200 fields each year from a pool of 20,000 hectares of land in the vale of York and along the length of the Magnesian limestone belt.

Each year 60 land suppliers provide 2100 hectares of land for growing peas and petits pois.

Lifted from their website further down t'page.

Thank you!!

Clearly the BBC research team lifted the 77sq.miles from the 20,000ha figure on the website that I quoted! Thought it sounded rather excessive.
