Again an attack by the "nimbys".Here in North Norfolk we get lots and lots of tourists & visitors.Local farmers have diversified and have resturants & farm shops on their properties ,good luck to them.We indigenous welcome the visitors. They can be a pain at times when they cannot reverse their new Rangerovers,or go onto the verge for fear of getting mud on the wheels, but we live with them!!

I have employed a lot of Eastern Europeans to pick fruit and know exactly what you mean.
The "translator" often turned to me and said I don't know what he is saying in my own language never mind yours. We usually managed somehow.

we used to use lads from Ireland for harvedt help - reckon I understood about 1 word in 4 !

The trouble is that this attracts far more punters than your average farm shop...

In the next 18months /2yrs I would never be surprised if Jeremy Clarkson, either has his farm contract farmed or sells it.
I say the above as I think by then he will of proved to his followers that their is no money in farming and he has enjoyed the experience of being a so say hands on farmer, but he has had enough and will let others who are more dedicated than him to do the farming for him.
I hope I am proved incorrect as Clarkson has certainly done a lot of good by educating the public about the trials and tribulations of farming ,yet very little money to be made from farming.

It has been much worse since the advent of sat navs, before which they stuck to the main road. A couple of years ago we had a Range Rover look at the Wighton-Binham road which had a puddle all the way across, and question whether it was really the road to Binham.

That, and the 'car park' is basically a muddy field, so all the visiting townies park on the main road so they don't get their cars dirty...

He got planning for a very small farm shop, strictly to sell 'locally' produced goods. As often happens, that was just the beginning though, and before long it would become a bigger retail unit and suddenly the whole area is swamped with traffic. There is a reason why nobody would get pp for a big retail premises there from the outset, which haven't changed just because it's two years on. That trick's been done too many times and planners are waking up to it.

I dare say he'll still get it pushed through at some stage, it'll just take him a bit longer, more money and a few appeals.

He's had it contract farmed for years since he bought it, so it will only be going back to that. It will have to be with a different contractor, but there are plenty round there that would oblige.

The sheep flock, such that it was, have supposedly already been 'merged' into someone else's flock.

Beef there now to replace them. I'm guessing he'll work his way through all the livestock one by one.....need something "new" for the cameras to film after all.

Hmm. To me, all that registers is: a rich, entitled old phwrrrrt wants everything his own way by yesterday, and is prepared to attempt to twist what planning rules that still exist to that end.

I’m a Clarkson fan. That said I think the way he is going about all of this is wrong. No other farmer would/could take advantage of the system quite like this. It bugs me that celebs (and developers) can just use their significant amounts of money to barge their wishes through almost regardless.

I really support what he is doing raising the profile of farming and am grateful for this. That said I wish he would stick to the rules rather than being disingenuous and intentionally devious.
He is suggesting that he is a genuine farmer trying to mitigate the loss of subs….and yet is and can do that without breaking any rules by using his celeb status alone. I’m fine with him using his celeb status and applaud him for this, but him then claiming he needs a restaurant to sell his beef for a profit is just rubbish.
The use of his celeb status to sell at a premium negates the “genuine farmer trying to handle the loss of subs” reasons/angle of his argument entirely in my book.

I wish he would be one or the other (genuine farmer, or celeb)….don’t try and mix the two to achieve something that isn’t in the spirit of the rules.

If he wants to create “Jeremy Clarkson World” then good on him. I just lose respect for him when he’s trying to do it via the back door.

I don’t think it tarnishes the industry but it certainly doesn’t help quash existing stereotypes of farmers.

Six miles away is Dalesforth farm Shop if you can call it that . It’s huge to say the least. That’s just over the border into Gloucestershire maybe there planners are more progressive if Jeremy built anything a1/4 of the size it would still provide a good few jobs for the area

Daylesford is a completely different kettle of fish, owned by the JCB family and organic.
I doubt you’d see Kaleb or Gerald their!
…… You might see Cheerful Charlie there as he has the right accent!

So it’s a farm shop and probably set off in a small way too I’ve been before left without buying anything there but had a few beers at Jez’s place.
There’s a farm shop not so far away called Mainsgill they set off in a small way now its huge too
You have to start some where .

I suppose Daylesford is technically a ‘Farm Shop’

Some people use it as their Massage Parlour!
Others buy the on sale bits of dried out driftwood off the beach for an absolute fortune, take it home and look at it as a piece of ‘Art’ rather than put it in their log burner as fire wood!!

Most probably end up there, because they got fed up with waiting in such long queues at Diddly Squat, so thought they’d check out the competition. Only to find that its too expensive and nobody can understand your accent, let alone you understand why any of their staff like eating Plums all the time while they are trying to speak to you!
On top of which your car probably isn’t posh enough and you get diverted into the overflow car park, surrounded by hedges.

Allegedly, it has never shown a profit at any time in its entire existence, despite the fact that it is registered in the Cayman Islands, which you only do if you expect to make huge profits, but want to avoid paying too much tax!
But, as it is owned by JCB, they probably don’t mind one of their businesses loosing ‘a bit’ of money, do they?

I expect it did start as small and has grown into what it is now.
In many ways it is a bit like farming insofar as economies of scale don’t necessarily earn you more money, or lose less of it. Sometimes the reverse happens.

……They do sell nice cheese though!………

Unfortunately,I think what you say is the same across most of England, it certainly is in the Cotswolds. RangeRover,Q..Audis,Porsche Macan/Cayenne ,drivers seem to me to the most reluctant to pull over when approached head on,on country lanes.

I heard that Lord Bamford once said it was cheaper to fund Lady Bamfords projects rather than fund a divorce!!!!!!!
Perhaps it was an April fool’s day tale ;)

Not only in England, we too get far too many of the posers and hatchet faced young women poncing about in their private plated Chelsea tractors. Most of them just trying to out do their neighbours and have a bigger vehicle than other ‘friends’ from the seething snake pits that constitute such social circles.
