I've got 20 red crosses that have just calved this spring and another 20 to bull next month but I'm not planning on using any more until I see how these get on. For lower input systems it's easy to find Irish and NZ black and white bulls that transmit jersey like milk proteins but I'm nervous the reds will drop my solids more than I'd like.

Interesting....

Which is better? Fiiiiight ...

Mine are pretty well all black with a slight ginge tinge. They are Ayrshire cross rather than Scandinavian. They certainly have some life about them, ever since they were calves they could be spotted by the speed they run and the way they slam into the front gates of the crush.

Yes I could say the same about mine, they're about 5 litres a day behind the Norwegian reds but look built for the long haul. I bet they'll come into their own as 3rd calvers. I'm going to use some Jeepers Creepers this year.

People forget that the first crosses are great but at some point you have to back cross this is where you get very poor animals which is a far inferior to the pure breeds
Really, we've been a xbred herd since we started dropped the shorthorns, maybe 40 years ago and the wheels haven't dropped off yet👌, just need clear breeding goals and don't do it half hearted.

Im only going by my experience in both dairy beef and sheep im not saying backcrosses are useless but they have been far inferior to the pures or straight first and second crosses

Let’s not forget the entire country of NZ. Obviously uncrossed herds there but a lot of crossies too. Here we use a lot of crossbred semen and jersey. The NZ Fresian is larger than a lot realize.
