when i started out, on my own, used to layer the mix, in round feeders, maize silage, blend and grass silage on top, cows mixed it beautifully, burrowing down through the grass, to get to the maize, mixing the blend nicely. The cream, was being asked, what mixer did we have, to do such a nice job ! Then i bought a mixer wagon, looking back, at the money spent, on diet feeders, probably a mistake.

What sort of a ration would you recommend for a pure jersey and crossbred herd in spring currently have a pit of rocket fuel may cut silage only problem its too good and cows now scouring on it.i dont want to go down diet feeder route as for the short period they will be fed indoors its just another heap of machinery to be bought and maintained. Was thinking of feeding a high fibre nut through the parlour to keep things simple

It's no help now but I think you want third week of may type first cut for fresh cows in spring and either wholecrop or maize at this time of year. I'm 8kg dm pasture, 3 of wc sb and 3 of a 16% nut. If I had more silage I could probably cut the cake in favour of more silage with no adverse affect. I find wc or maize keeps the cows far more content in autumn and keeps the percentages up.

if shitting to loose, i always aim to slow down the speed it goes through them, usually hay. But the theory say's, good grass should be the enough. This is where theory, competes with practical. Good grass/silage, needs to stay in the cow, long enough to be fully utilised, otherwise you are wasting it. That is where good husbandry steps in. You just have to find a balance, with what you have available. Spring calved cows, or winter calved cows, have different requirements. We hopefully, will have enough maize, to feed at turnout, to service, theory being the extra energy, will help fertility, time will tell.

Jersey empty from last year now a suckled cow

That's interesting, I'm looking at doing something similar here (y)
A mate of mine has Droimeanns, any reason why you picked that breed for the bull?
Biggest reason: marketing, they have super story & are so eye catching. Lads in the society are very encouraging too which does make a difference with rare breeds I think. Also they are medium size, are Hardy, very protective but also gentle cattle
