Can am 570 & 450 here, Hondas too. Power on the 450 is rubbish compared to the 570, it’s much smoother. If I didn’t have a 570 I’d probably think the 450 is fine. If I had to pick one it would be the 570..
Jimny here too..tried kubota, Polaris and can am utv’s. Liked the can am but for 16k odd for what I wanted I bought a jimny instead. Too low on standard tires and no lift kit for serious stuff but pick your places and it’s no problem. More I drive it more I like it, don’t think I’d be without one now. Keep jumping in That instead of the izuzu or car just because it’s sitting there. Not that heavy on juice, lasts well and only costs about £40 to fill up.
Looked into the kap landmaster but thought it was too much if it didn’t do what I wanted so afraid to take the risk. Wouldn’t say the jimny would like carrying 500kg day in day out or even dragging trailers around too much. You could pick a cheap jimny up, lift it and get a lower ratio gearbox reasonably cheaply. It would easily last 3 years and have far less depreciation than a utv. You won’t even need a lower ratio box if you don’t need to drive at low revs and crawl to find traction over certain stuff or move heavy loads.
However if you’re fussy they are bumpy, slow , lack a bit of torque and lack quality but I still think it’s great for knocking around the place..

Used to run an SJ413 back in the day... great tool and with proper tyres, wonderful off road. and took me green laning (before it became over popular!) used daily around my place. My now wife used to borrow it for feeding sheep and checking stock as their Defender was too heavy and made a mess... :)

Always seemed a shame that we never really saw the pickup and flatbed versions here in the UK. I remember loads in Oz and NZ.

2nd hand gator for 3grand.
Diesel, light, easy to Drive reliable with easily sourced parts.
Granted dear parts.
My gators 5 year old with over 5000 hours on the clock.
Costs around a thousand a year to service and maintain including Labour.
Saves a thousand a year on fuel compared to a quad.
Depreciation is killer at over a 1000 a year. (but won't be if you buy 2nd hand)
I have a quad as well but take gator every time apart from lambing time or chasing cattle

Where do you find used ones for £3k ?

In an age of global warming and carbon footprints I think more farmers will look to reduce fuel bills and become environmentally friendly with horse/pony power!

And of you don't like the thought of riding, there's always the pony quad, aka the "saddlechariot".

If your on a road a lot, yes... in the fields - not so much really.

Pain in the arse getting off and on, compared to a bike or UTV, and hopeless for catching things unless your dog is brilliant!

Old Fergie will be more reliable and last a lot longer as these UTVs too
I used an old ford with a box for while when i couldnt afford a decent quad it took me half a day to feed ewes in troughs. 2 hours with a bike and trailer. Less than an hour with a snacker now wouldnt go back if i could help it. Tractor is definetly a lot more reliable that old ford is 40 years old and will do another 40 if i look after it. Do 20 even if i dont

Haha! Last few posts have made me chuckle because that's basically what dad has done his whole life, tractor and link box...... or walking!

He's never taken hs drivers test, there was a series 3 landy here for a couple years when I was a little kid.....but it ended up at the bottom of somewhere it shouldn't have.....funny how history repeats it's self each generation

Most of my childhood, the 4x4/ quad equivalent was a mf362 with loader & a 6x4 link box which several neighbours commented it must have been welded to the link arms

That tractor basically never did any field work it's entire life, bit it did cover about a million miles of stock checking & rounding up..... the horn was replaced several times!
The horn was more important than the pto.....which was never used!

All 5 of us siblings were often found in the link box :D ready to jump out to fill the role of sheep dogs

We used to dare each other to jump out then run along behind to jump back in.....while moving....&with out dad noticing

I've been thinking of 1, I could buy 2 hondas for the price of 1 Gator - bought a 14plate Isuzu pickup instead for less money than a gator!

Your neither wet or dry in a gator. Everyone I know who has 1 has still retained at least 1 quad because you can't catch or outrun sheep with a gator... a diesel quad that pulls like a petrol will have to come out soon! Doing 17,000km a year on petrol is rather expensive :/
Sadly there's no market for a diesel quad. English farmers are a tiny market and all the yanks only want petrol toys to play with!!
