Jo Swinson in danger of ....

The main problem with the Liberal democrats is that they completely forgot their principles.
I have voted for them many times and shared their disappointment that their vote share has not been reflected by the number of seats. This election, they said it was completely democratic way to overturn brexit if they were elected. A complete reverse of a long term philosophy.
Jo Swinson also gave their EU election result as a reason to be included in the leaders debate. I am sure she would have insisted Farage was also there as the Brexit Party's total vote was almost as much as 2nd and 3rd combined.
She also got her knickers completely twisted by her attempts to be extreme liberal and give everyone the right to self identify for gender.
There was a real opportunity for the party to be a long-term contender for government and they blew it.

I concur with your observations and comments.

My post was not intended per se as a post in support of the Liberal Democrat policies in the 2019 General Election, but to highlight the potential for iniquity of the FPTP electoral system, irrespective of their manifesto policies. Likewise The Brexit Party and Green would have more MPs if a non FPTP system.

Now turning to the LIB Dems, I in general agree the party had an opportunity to be adult and campaign for another referendum, but ended up foolishly misguided to go for revoke.

And now any potential for leverage to look again at electoral system is lost for a generation.

I am going to have to move to a marginal constituency!!

Regards.

As you know, I support PR too. But it won't happen in any foreseeable future, because Labour and Tory governments probably wouldn't happen - not in their own right - and neither are sufficiently 'democratic to act altruistically.

But I don't think the LDs can claim any moral high-ground in this matter, they just want to be king-makers. Deciding who has power, but with only a relatively small proportion of any vote behind them. :(

I agree, the Lib Dems in my view have no claim at all to moral high-ground.

My preference for PR is based on all parties, irrespective of political stance gaining representation in Parliament if they gain enough of the popular vote. I appreciate this might afford small, potentially disruptive parties, often with unsavory aspects, a chance to win a seat(s) in Parliament; but that would open up these parties and supporters to face open, legitimate scrutiny and accountability in Westminster.

I have no particular allegiance to the Lib Dems, although I readily appreciate some of my posts may indicate support and, for the sake of transparency, will say I do concur with a reasonable amount of the underlying principles of the Lib Dems, though not so much at this particular Election as they 'lost their way' under Swinson, but then again I also agree with some Conservative and some 'New Labour' not current 'Corbynista' Labour policies.

I doubt seriously if there will be any change to the electoral system in my lifetime. I am not sure it is 'healthy' for such large numbers of voters in the popular vote to in effect not have representatives in Parliament.
