Job interview

Really? So references should only ever be taken from the selective few that the interviewee thinks will say something glowing? If the reference given is somebody not known to the interviewer, what's to stop the candidate giving his best mate's number (which I know has been done plenty of times).

When we've been looking to employ anyone, I want to ask as many people as possible. Someone specifically saying 'don't ask so and so' would certainly set alarm bells ringing with me. Alarm bells in an interviewer isn't a good thing.
I would rather not get the job than have a future employer risk my current employment by going against my wishes..If this is what you do then it shows you have no respect for your employee's.

No, it just shows somebody that has had experience of chancers coming for job interviews, and know of people that have taken on some real problems by not being able to find out enough about interviewees beforehand. It's also one of the reasons why a lot of jobs don't come with houses any more. Unfortunately, it changes the way you view all candidates.

Jobs I have taken in the past required no references as you can tell during the interview if you asked the right questions....same as me going for an interview, if I ask a question that almost questions what they are doing is wrong you can get a good idea on the guys attitude.

Whilst I appreciate we were born on different sides of the fence, I have always found decent employers very thin on the ground.

Many
went something like this.....

Farmer...'Did you work for Smiths at some point'
Me 'Yes but please don't contact them for a reference as they are friendly with my current employer and I can do without the hassle of him finding out..please use our vets Mr Jones as a referee'
Farmer 'understandable'

Imagine my surprise when last night I received a message from Smiths...'Did you get that Job at broadbank? My dad said they were on the phone'.....

Once again the honesty and integrity of Dairy farmers shines through........

note all names have been changed and I am not griping at all dairy farmers..just a select few....

Many years ago I had same thing , interviewer said he knew my current boss , I said " don't tell him I was here " he replied " no problem wouldn't think of it "

Next day boss asked how interview went , I told him story and said I wouldn't work for a liar , he offered me job and I told him what I thought of him ,

There is a tried and tested process for interviewing and employing people. Please remember, farmers can be very difficult employers, it's in the breeding :)

Therefore, anyone who has worked for a few are likely to have fallen out with someone along the line, it's not the end of the World.

If requesting references, then check what/who you are legally allowed to ask, and take care with the questions at the interview - it's a funny old World we live in.

If you make a formal job offer, then ' hear some bad crack ' about your new employee and withdraw the offer, you are set up to be sued for breach of contract (even though they may not have even started working for you yet).

Easy solution - follow the process - respect confidentiality.

I don’t doubt 5hat there are plenty of employers out there like that, about as many as there are blaggers looking for jobs I expect.
You do come across, on this thread anyway, as having a very poor attitude towards farmers that you may be asking for a job at some point.:scratchhead:

Surely you appreciate that employers have to protect themselves against ‘wrong ‘uns’ (I could use stronger words), particularly where a house might be offered, as much as prospective employees would seek to avoid working for certain types of employers?

Example...years ago in Lancashire I was working as a dairyman on a small herd...detached bungalow half way down the farm drive. My wife and I were sat watching the TV and we heard the front door shut..3 young kids asleep in bed, we went to check on them and noticed the bathroom door locked and the shower running..10 minutes later out walks the boss..'What are you doing?' I asked..'My shower is not working so I am using yours' I replied 'But its my house'..'no he said its my house and my shower'....I shouted to the wife to start packing....And I bet alot of other farm workers who live in tied accommodation can say similar things have happened to them...I have been rung up half way through a holiday on another farm to get back to work or lose my house....I was threatened to lose my house after not feeding calves, when I never fed the calves and the boss had forgot..pee'd up........In tied accommodation some farmers do treat you like slaves and not like employees.....It is not an offensive comment when used in this instance, it is a true comment...
