water cooled fitted in a Bateman RB25. Is there anything to watch out for in high houred models? I’ve been offered a very tidy RB25 but it’s done 12,000 hours. Two owners and I’d be buying it privately so no come back. In general it’s extremely tidy machine and I’m not to bothered if I need to replace the pump or spray lines but replacing an engine is a different matter. Realistically how long can this engine go for? Asking price is £20,000.

If its the same engine as fitted to jd tractors then headgaskets could be an issue but otherwise generally a solid enough engine but 12000 hours is still quite a few hours

Has the engine had any work done to it?
It could be showing signs of problems now, that's why its for sale?
Perhaps price up some engine rebuild/replacement options first, so you've some idea of cost should it go bang. If the rest of the machine is good a new/rebuilt engine may work out cheaper than a lower hours second hand model.

Inspect , Rev it black to clear should be , is it breathing if not don’t worry about the engine .

If it’s been serviced well it will be fine, find out from current owners, look for witness marks on bolts, ask questions.

should not have been under much load spraying all It’s life.

could go on forever ,or blow next week.

For example the quarry’s just shifted 3, 777 cats 16k hours with no engine troubles , off to Ozz to go again.

The stuff that’s in a quarry that has had “no trouble” will be getting a top end re-build at 15-20,000 hours with piston rings and liners for what they would consider routine servicing.

An SP sprayer is an easy life for an engine. Mostly constant medium RPM, medium load work. No lugging or hard acceleration. Also Bateman specify industrial spec engines and fit large cooling packs, so the engines don't seem to suffer the regular issues seen in tractors.

I do not run the plant so I’ll stand corrected intill I find out the Finnings maintenance package on them . But I’m 80 percent sure there been no serious engine work. Maybe that’s why there off ?

transmissions have been changed as per package .

@nick... the shift is 6.30 am till 6pm plenty of time to be cold started, and let’s just say operates are not concerned about warm up shut down procedure

op if it feels rite buy the machine if not walk. Price In a engine rebuild . 5-8k maybe ??

So spoke to operator not gospel but he’ll have a fair idea of the 3 trucks all had transmissions at set hours , one had terminal engine fault at 6.500 hours REMan by finning.

The other two were fine all had turbos as precaution fan clutch, ac pump, but engines never opened up or swapped out

Engines serviced at 250 hours - major 500, so I’m told. Auto grease every shift

so the story is mirror the heavy industry world and our tinpot tractors should last lol still they earn real money mining .

John Deere engines 👍
Current line up turbo Ed 3130 spent a big part of its life hooked up to a big irrigation pump sat flat out 24 /7 apart from shut down on Sunday night to change oil 28000 hrs now restored and in shed
6610 coming up 16000
6900 13000
Old 6420 did 15000 before balancer shaft went so bodged it and went to Cheffins
All had oil and serviced at 2/3rds or hours of what they say r series get done at 500 not 750
All on gen filters and. Witham oil

woyld not be frightened of high hours if you know the history
Friend in Cumbria has 8340 with over 27000 hours on it and still good
Service it regular and a sympathetic driver , should be good
The mission is 20000 hrs on 6900

We've got an 1140 that's just ticked past 30K. Has an easy life shunting around the yard, beet and potato planting 10 months of the year, then gets a merry thrashing on a straw trailer at harvest.

Had an unnecessary engine rebuild at 25K to solve poor starting, but the fault was actually the fuel pump!

Other than regular servicing (oil every 250 hours etc) it’s never had anything done which is why I’m nervous slightly.
It starts and runs well but you never know. It’s a lot of hours on an engine even though in terms of annual use it’s only 500 hours per year.

The hydro drive motors and pump have the ability to create very large bills, in excess of what fairly deep engine surgery would cost (eg injectors, HG, top end rebuild, turbo etc) so I would be much more concerned of the health of those than the engine at those hours.

I’d resigned myself to the fact that wheel motors and pumps etc - lines, plumbing, wiring etc may need doing and I’ve built that into the budget. Basically over 10 years if I carry on using a contractor it’s going to cost me in the region of £120,000. So if I spend £20,000 on a SP and have to spend another £20,000 repairing it I’m not to fussed. Ok I’ll never get my £40,000 back in residual but it’ll be worth £10,000 in 10 years time and will be around 15,000 hours.
HOWEVER there’s a point where you’ve got to stop and all the above and an engine wouldn’t be ideal.
