John Deere 20 series tractor quick couplers

Our 56 reg John Deere 6220p has hydraulic quick couplers. The usual 2 double acting spools and so 4 couplers.
The male pipe on the machines may rarely go in fairly easily, or it’s a fight. It’s the same on removal. We stop the engine and move all the levers plus the loader controls to get out any pressure. They are just awful to work with compared to the old and new blue tractors and all the IH we had in the past.
Mechanics spray wd40 in there. No one ever made them any better. One was replaced a long time ago with proper JD item. It’s no better.
There are aftermarket replacements. Has anyone ever found one type that works better?
Just smacked my elbow into the mower last night when the valve eventually let go and it’s hurting today! Need to improve this before haytime.

Do you push the pipe in before trying to pull it out?

Thanks
Yes we know that: only sometimes it won’t push in.
So that makes me think pressure in system only we have moved every lever and even the electric third service on the loader.

What type have you got? The ones with a pipe to drain any leaks away & lift up green covers on the end or the basic ones? Are you sure its not the male ends your plugging in causing problems?

Could be the male ends but we don’t have this drama on other tractors, plus a big part of the problem is pulling the pipes off at the end of the task.

Pushing the spool levers all into float should dump any pressure in them? I wouldn't spray WD40 into them, it's not a lubricant and it is carp to be frank. All wants a good clean out with steam cleaner and detergent and a look at the state of the couplers, both male and female sides. If the male part is bashed about and the cone is pants they don't work well.

It can be very difficult to connect them if there is pressure in the implement side before you start.

They are still green so are the originals. 20 series where made upto 2007 I think so chances are they are worn out.
You can replace them with simpler, cheaper ones but you'll need new covers then. Get yourself some reasonable priced ones from nick young tractor parts.

I think there’s roughly ten quid difference between NY & a JD dealer for that style. By the time you haggle a discount & get the dealers van man to deliver for free I expect they work out the same.
But yeah they probably want replacing. They may be slightly stiffer to use than standard, basic ones. But nothing really noticeable.
Decent quality “Faster” branded standard m22 couplings are getting up towards the same price by the time to buy a decent flip up dust cover.

You are right, when you get a discount from the dealer it is often cheaper than Nick Young.

My bad, it's been a while. No point for me getting anything there anymore as it is importing form outside the EU.

It still seems worthwhile clicking a few keys & checking nick youngs prices. Seems to be cheaper on some things, but not others. For anything non urgent I think I’m right in saying our local JD dealer does weekly stock orders which give the best discount & free delivery over £50, one day a week for set areas. Which as the man in the van says, it’s not much more than a simple filter these days.
