John Deere 2030 4x4, ceased rear wheels, moving it

We have been given a John Deere 2030, has a front loader and cab. Its stranded in a field about 200 yards from what will be our barn. The owner says her rear wheels are ceased, something failed internally and stopped her dead. The engine is supposedly a runner. The problem is shes on top of the hill and the only way to get her to the barn is taking it on loop round a downhill gravel track then 500 yards up a tarmac road.

No idea if she starts, I was thinking on taking the loader off and perhaps somehow put slings around her to lift with the teleyhandler but clearing the cab is going to be difficult. I don't have access to a trailer here to winch her up onto. Only my bale trailer which is pretty low to the ground but it would be case of lifting her onto it.

I know nothing about John Deere's, any suggestions on possible cause of the rear wheels being locked solid? supposedly its some internal shaft has warped on bent.

Cheers, James

Most probably one of the pinions in the crown and pinion have broken . They were a weak point. From memory not too bad a job to repair if it is just the pinion. If the carrier has gone too it will be expensive. I have in the past redrilled the pinion carrier at 90 degrees to carry new pinions, but it was a long time ago!

You could take take the loader and rear lift arms off and lift the front up with a sling from the side with the telehandler and reverse the bale trailer underneath. Then pallet forks under the back axle and lift the rear up and push it on to the trailer.

Yes seized, sorry the wonders of bad spelling... I like the idea of lifting her on the back and getting the old man to steer. Probably easier than our bale trailer given it has a rear lip which might be awkward!

If its that then great. The tractor is fairly tidy - so I want to get her in the shed and split pretty quickly. Hopefully its what you mentioned.

Thanks for the idea's - I will give it ago next couple of weeks.

Finally managed to have a quick look at her - put new batteries in, checked the coolant, diesel and oil, engine started on the button! (3 degrees at the time).

Apart from the handbrake being stuck the clutch can't be disengaged so without knowing the internals I assume the thrust race has failed. Checked the linkage, and if I disconnect the pedal I can move its full range by hand with little effort so something must be broken.

The field has turned into a swamp at the moment so I'm not going to even attempt with the telescopic unless it freezes but I'm thinking of starting it in gear and see if she does move under her own power, or wait for the dead spot in the duel power and slip it in gear.

Something I've noticed is the gear's thenselves and Hi-Lo seem alittle vague, they pop in and out with little resistance. Could that be the detent spring's for the levers? and a lack of oil in the gearbox regarding the dual power? (just on the bottom of the dip stick).

Cheers,

is that a 4Wd drive? if so fairly certainly hydraulic. In which case , if, it is working, put her in any forward gear the front wheels should turn when the 4WD is put in gear via the switch. Be careful as the tractor will have no speed limitation ;)

Yes its 4 wheel drive - but it has a prop shaft running from the left hand side of the gear box to the front dif with a physical selector lever :) Going to play with it on Friday.
